Two days to waste between Pensacola and DFW
We have two easy days to make this trip. Has anyone made this trip recently
and has current road conditions . The last time we came out of Gulfport rte 49 was as rough as a cob. I figure two options interstate 49 in Louisiana stay in
Shreveport or go into Texas stay at Sam Rayburn C.O.E . and run 96 North...
Thanks for ideas.....,

Two days? I assume that means one stayover night? We make the run from TX to FL quite often going thru Dallas on 121 (entrance to DFW) and use I10 to FL. We cut S on 267 and go to Panacea, S of Crawfordville. Can you not go N and get on I10?
We take an easy FOUR days to make our trip but we are 5 1/2 hours the other side of DFW. Depending on how far you want to get/how close to DFW on the first day there are several options but don't know if we've stayed in the locations that are where you want to land. Any ideas on about where you will be?
Let me clairfy: we take 121 in Dallas to I20 via 635 then I20 to Vicksburg, Jackson MS; at Jackson we go to Hattiesburg then Mobile and get on I10.

One thing to keep in mind on sourdough's trip: Better that you should put your tow vehicle in 4 wheel drive and just pull cross country through ditches and fields than to drive the interstates through Jackson, Mississippi. So help me, ALL the roads in Alaska are better than I-55 through that city. Once you are south of the city it improves considerably. I-20 through town is fair at best.

I wanted to see what his route was because I wanted to warn him about I20 in Jackson - terrible. The other side of that is that the alternative is to route thru Baton Rouge which I did twice and said never again. Both trips thru Baton Rouge traffic was at a standstill for no apparent reason. The first trip I was staying at a hotel in Baton Rouge and asked the concierge what the deal was. He said that lots and lots of people came into town from New Orleans and that area when Katrina hit and never left, and they haven't done anything to improve the infrastructure.
I20 eastbound in Jackson is just downright terrible. Going west on the return trip it's not so bad.....but not good. I know the bad sections now and just slow down....a lot, and make sure everything is secured before traversing that section. The first time thru it, my new TT's maiden voyage, I lost the sliding bathroom door which tore out a lot of woodwork due to breaking the roller/hangers. It got my attention on that trip.
If you eliminate the upper and lower interstate routes there's not a lot left but rural highways which I don't like to use on a long trip. The OP may want to look into those but some of them are really pretty rough as well.

We made this trip from the East in January. Jacksonville to Baton Rouge on I-10; I-12, then I-49 to Shreveport and from there I-20 west. Didn't go into DFW because we were going to Gainesville. Stayed in Destin, which is a ways off I-10, Baton Rouge and Shreveport before Gainesville. Roads were fine and traffic not bad, although we usually are only on the road between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm so we don't run into much rush hour traffic.
We used I-20; I-10 from Columbia, SC to El Paso in December '13 and both said never again. Jackson MS was probably the worst but there were others. The last 150 miles into El Paso is uphill and we had a 30 mph headwind, so probably will not go that way again.

If you want to "push" a few miles further, just north of Alexandria, at exit 90, is Alexandria RV Park. It's a private 15 site park with full hookups. The exit has a Cracker Barrel, fuel, BK and McD's as well as a couple small convenience stores. If you're into BBQ, Eddie's BBQ has some excellent choices.
The RV park advertises 75' x 20' sites. You'd think they might be "crowded" with only 20', but that's the size of the gravel pad. The actual space between sites is closer to 75' as well. I think the 15 sites are located on a 4 acre site, under tall pecan trees. No bath house, but they do have a laundry room and the owner lives "on site" as does the "grandfather". It's an easy on/easy off park, about 1.5 miles off I-49, and if you follow Highway 1 North to the next exit on I-49, there's no back tracking to get back on the interstate.
Here's the website. It's where we stay every time we visit "our old hometown"..... http://www.alexandriarvpark.com/
Oh, and it's $28 a night for full hookups.

Sorry I can't help on that route. We've taken it many times but not pulling a camper so didn't really look.

Eddie's BBQ is good, their "main location" is on MacArthur Drive, about 5 or 6 miles from the campground, but the Exit 90 store has the same food, just a different atmosphere.
If you like Mexican, El Repairo at the corner of LA 28 and MacArthur Drive is about as authentic as you can get in Louisiana. So authentic that if you don't speak Spanish, you pretty much have to "point and smile" to order LOL
If you are planning to stop in Alexandria, call to make reservations. Alexandria Campground has only been in business 3 or 4 years and the more the word spreads, the harder it is to get a campsite.

If you can't get in the Alexandria RV Park, about the only alternative is Coushatta Casino in Kinder. Good facilities, usual expensive mediocre casino food.
There is a smaller park on Hwy 165 south of Kinder that has mixed reviews; and maybe one on Hwy190 west of Kinder. Haven't stayed at either of these two.
