Fuel mileage towing.

Today I made two trips to the same destination pulling two different trailers. The first was a 22' Layton. I pulled at 65 mph and averaged 11.1 mpg. The second trip was pulling my new Cougar 28 RBS. Again, I set my cruise at 65 mph. I averaged 11.7 pulling the larger Cougar. Perhaps the new nose cap on the Cougar made a difference.

Same thing happened when I went from springdale 189fl (24ft 5k pound) to my 37ft 10k pound 323bhs. Think with the front nose and a and just the way it handles makes the difference.

I found this little video a while ago that appears to show big changes to the aerodynamics of a boxy trailer with the addition of a little nose cone:

This might also suggest that even a small headwind could affect mileage significantly, but having the molded front cap was one of the reasons we chose the Premier.

Try it at 55 mph next time. On 250 mile trip it is 3.85 hrs @ 65 mph and 4.54 hrs @ 55 mph. A 41 minute time saving but I'd guess fuel economy will improve about 1.5-2.0 mpg.

Personally, I like to keep engine near the 1500 RPM (+/- 200 RPM) and I see the best mileage.

At 65 I am turning 1800. 55mph does make a huge difference but I'm a former racer, it's hard!

If I tried 55 I'd be right on the edge between 4th and 5th gear, with any grade resulting in the downshift to 4th, So I generally run between 64 and 66, gets me into 6th gear and purrs along at about 1700 RPM
