Common Overlooked Item

We all do our typical checks each spring, before each trip, and periodically throughout the year. The typical things like checking tires, the roof, bearings, etc... I have another, often overlooked item I think should be added to your spring checks. A few years back we were out camping in our then 3 year old 5er. The rains started, before we knew it water was running in around the AC unit. A quick check didn't reveal anything wrong with the roof. Finally narrowed the leak down to the AC unit actually being loose and the water was running in around the seal. The AC was bolted in with self locking nuts, but they either loosened up from shaking on the drive or the seal compressed over time. This particular trip was a long one with 1300 miles from home to destination. I now pull the AC covers from time to time just to make sure there is good contact around the seals to prevent leaks. It's not fun trying to find/fix leaks in the rain!

You might also think about replacing the seals every 3-4 years as an extra precaution. Like all seals over time, the seal on the A/C can become hard, brittle and overly compressed and lose its effectiveness.

A close inspection, as suggested by bsmith0404, is a great idea and he's right - is often overlooked.
