Camera Ready Wire

The wire attached to the "camera ready" bracket on my 2022 Alpine 3032RL is hot even when not attached to truck but attached to shore power. Any ideas about this? Just a Keystone quality control issue?

Is it hot when attached to the truck and you don't have the lights on? What I'm understanding is, it's not hot when on battery power alone but its hot when attached to TV or shore power, is that correct?

Camera power is 12V, yours may be wired directly to the battery or giggy box. It may be the way it’s supposed to be. When I worked at a Grand designs dealership the camera was wired hot all the time.

Yup - the Alpine factory wire for a rear camera is wired HOT.

Then the camera is on all of the time? Is there a good reason for that that is escaping me? It's not difficult to simply tap into the clearance light wiring for the install. That's what I'd be tempted to do. YMMV

As I remember when the Furrion camera first came out it was powered by the center clearance light. Problems were being reported, poor quality picture and reception. Furrion found that the issue was low voltage and then the manufacturers started wiring it direct and the issues all but went away.

Ah...didn't know that. Our rig came prewired to the clearance light and it has worked just fine. We also didn't use a Furrion camera so not sure how much difference that makes. They all likely need 12v. I would still be temped to check the clearance light wire for voltage to see if it would work OK. Camera on full time seems odd to me.

Thanks for your responses. Here's how this played out from the beginning. Before I posted my question, a month ago, I installed the backup camera without checking the voltage. When I hooked up shore power (not truck) the camera worked, although on all the time, so I thought I could live with it. However, when I plugged in my truck to travel, no running lights, brake lights, etc. Zero. Took the camera out of the loop, and all worked. Obviously something is wrong.

What truck do you have? Apparently some are now providing less than 12v to the trailer plug and require an adapter to up the voltage.

Let's break this down. The camera requires 12vdc. If it ONLY worked when plugged into shore power then that tells me 2 things. 1, the camera is wired to the battery and if it has a switch it is on. 2, as it only works with shore power connected then the camera is not making the connection to the battery and thhe converter is supplying the 12vdc or the battery is dead. Check the battery disconnect switch to confirm the battery is on (connected).

The truck 7 way plug should have no bearing on this. If the truck trailer connection worked after removing the camera then there's some other explanation for that.

My Hideout is the same way. Its always powered up. I purposely bought the furrion system for the ease of installing since its all pre wired. But now i wish I would have bought a cheaper set up since now I have to figure out how to turn the cameras off.

You are correct. I've owned 2 Keystones and one is an Alpine 3701 (2022). The way I solved this problem was to tap into the clearance light hot wire and hook that up to the camera. When you do this, the camera is only "hot" when it's hooked up to your truck and you have the lights on.

2022 Montana HC 295; apparently built during "Covid". Factory installed incandescent marker bulbs so rear "camera ready" port only had 8.2 or so volts and Amazon camera required 10v min. Replaced all marker light bulbs with LED bulbs and now have 11+volts at factory camera port. Will get a new camera when home in May as it seems I somehow damaged camera or it was bad and I waited too late to exchange while we were traveling.
