Mouse proofing slide

Hi

I recently bought a cougar 22rbswe and I’ve been doing some mods and repairs of the typical new rv QC issues.

One of the jobs on my to do list has been sealing any potential gaps in the under belly or cabin where a mouse could get in. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the job done from the factory but I did spray foam any gaps I could find in the underbelly and found the pipes entering the cabin not sealed.

The one big potential spot I don’t yet know how to deal with is where the piston of the slide enters the underbelly. It makes for a really nice gap along the frame rail where a critter could get in. It’s not an easy spray foam fix because the piston has to move.

Anyone else done anything that they’d like to share?

You might consider two overlapping "rubber or vinyl flaps". Cut them both with a circular cutout that matches the ram on the slide mechanism. Install one above the ram, the other below the ram (and under the upper flap). That way they would "fall into place around the hole" after the ram moves in or out.

Here's what I did on mine. I took some wire mesh and trimmed it to fit around the actuator rod and put a piece on the inside and outside of the frame. Then I just spray foamed it in place and cleaned it up and painted it black.

Sealed it up good and the actuator slips in and out no problem.

Thanks for the tips. I have some old wire mesh laying around so I might give it a try.

Here’s photos before and after using flexible rubber glued to the steel. The one picture loaded sideways so you’ll have to twist your neck to see it. 😀

It’s better than factory but still not perfect. It will at least seal with the slide in but there’s still a gap around the piston with the slide out. There are also gaps below the rails which I’m sure they could get into. If the little pests really want in, they’ll get in.

Has anyone tried the mouse free spray? I’m considering that as well. I’m told it’s the same product that the stealership tried to sell me for $1000. I can do it myself for a fraction of the cost if it actually works.

Mouse Free

I have been using Mouse Free for 5 years and it does work. I applied it to my previous 5th wheel and never found another mouse(I kept a few traps in the front storage just in case). It is worth the money.
