Albuquerque (to Durango)

I'm heading to Durango in July. I was looking to stop near Albuquerque. It might just be an overnight stop now. It doesn't look there's much to do/see in that area. Should I just avoid it all together? I can go through Santa Fe, but was looking for something new. I've been up to Pagosa (via Santa Fe) a few times in the past years.

Any suggestions on decent parks? I was looking east to stay at a little higher elevation.
