RV Lemon Law & Warranties

Unlike motor-vehicles there are no "lemon-laws" covering RV units. My understanding is that a couple of proposals have been made by Consumer Protection groups in an effort to lobby for some Federal regulations which would require States to provide RV lemon law protection. Until that is accomplished, we should stay on top of manufacturers in getting them to honor their factory warranties and make sure that suppliers of "after-market" warranties honor them as well. Groups such as Good Sam and others that support RV owners should be encouraged to organize and lobby for RV lemon-law protection.

In 2002 I was hired as an investigator by a wealthy individual to assist in preparing a civil suit against a large manufacturer of Motor-Homes. The RV unit in question was a new unit sold to my client for $875.000,00. In 18 months after five 2000 mile round trips back to the manufacturer for warranty covered repairs, additional mechanical and structural issues manifested themselves. The owner demanded a replacement motor-coach and his request was initially denied by the dealer and ultimately the manufacturer. A civil-attorney was hired and he entered into negotiations with the Manufacturer. Those negotiations resulted in a "trade-in" (almost but not quite an even-exchange) which put the client into a new 2003 model.
Unfortunately the client had to spend money on investigative and attorney fees to get some level of satisfaction.

If RV Lemon-Laws are ever instituted, it will give manufacturers one more incentive to improve the quality of their products.

Out of curiosity, are there any lemon laws other than those for street motor vehicles? How about boats? Planes? And, since we’re talking about RVs, what about new homes?

Have you tried doing a Google search for lemon laws on planes, boats, new homes and other items not related to RV's and RVing?

Google shows lemon info all across the board – state-specific, and some hints that *all* consumer products are protected by lemon laws.
