Slide Toppers

I'm in the process of purchasing a 2021 Cougar 316rls and I'm having slide toppers installed on all three slide outs at the dealership. My sales person is telling me I can't have a slide topper installed on the living rm/dinette slide out due to having an awning on that slide out. Having the awning doesn't leave enough room to mount the rear topper bracket. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a work around solution? Thank you

Nope, I fought it until I was ready to drive up to the factory and slap the engineer that thought it was a good idea to put an awning on the slide... Still would like to if the opportunity ever presents itself... but I'd rather spend the time camping..

Forget it...

They WILL fit. I have both an awning and a slide topper on the living room slide of our 344MKS.

I was told by every awning manufacturer that they will not approve putting them on the slide with an awning mounted on it...

I was also told that it could be done but it would not be warranted in any manner.. The problem is where you have to mount the topper hardware with the awning on there... I'm not willing to tear the top off the slide just for a topper... I would however love to slap that engineer...

jfk69,
Do you have any pictures. On the 316rls there's a window, the awning arm, and then the end of the slide.

Guessing it depends on who you talk with. I been talking with camping world about having toppers put on my 29 rks 2020. I also have a awning over my slide and was told as long as there is room to mount the brackets and not in fear with the awning it’s good to go.

The manufacturers don't want you to mount to the lip of the slide as it is not made to support the stress... and that's where anyone I talked to wanted to mount the hardware for the toppers..

I was thinking of making an aluminum bracket that mounts to the face of the slide between the awning arm and the trim but overhangs or covers the trim. Then mount the topper bracket to the aluminum bracket. I'm trying to be creative and come up with a solution. I don't have the trailer yet so it's a little hard to envision. Thanks for the reply's, much appreciated.

Pics below. You can see it is mounted just under and just in from the lip, though part of the bracket is on the lip on each side. It does keep the awning from laying absolutely flush with the side, the top is about 1/2” off the wall, but this is acceptable according to the manufacturer.

This could be why they said NO on mine...

That’s tighter than what I have, but those slide cover brackets are pretty narrow, seems like it could be done if you don’t mind the awning out a bit at the top. Then again, they install them so maybe not. Or they’re worried they’ll get stuck with a warranty issue.

My salesman told me the same thing, then I asked the techs installing my 2nd ac and one said nope and the other argued with him that yes in fact he has installed them at that dealership.
I think when you tell the salesman what you would like to do he calls over to the service side and whoever answers the phone is who’s opinion he listens to. If he called three times he might get three different answers.
When someone tells me “no” if I’m calling a store about anything or even when someone at the store tells me “nope not in stock” I rarely take their word because it’s easier for someone to say no then to do the work when they say yes
But I didn’t know the manufacturer won’t warranty it

I can see why not on your setup. On mine the awning is above the slide.

I just purchased a keystone cougar half ton 29mbs a few weeks ago and they put toppers on all 3 slides for me. Never said anything about a possible problem with that.

I love the awning on the slide. It beats over the slide which in my opinion is useless.

My avalanche has an awning in the slide and a mobile tech figured out how to do it.
Maybe they can reposition the awning.

Looks like your awning is mounted to your slide. If so that’s why. On mine the awning is mounted above the slide not on the slide. So with mine you can mount the slide topper hardware to the slide like it should be.

You are correct, my awning is mounted on the slide itself which is really a bummer. I rarely ever use either awning and would much prefer to have slide toppers instead.

I have 2020 Cougar315RLS with the slide topper on the dinette slide that was installed from the factory. It also has the awning on it. Not sure if they made a change to it for 2021.

If you ever get the chance could you possibly post a few pictures showing how they are mounted? Would help me out and probably a few other people.
