Putting a Diesel engine into a gasser can get expensive. If you want to use a Powerstroke engine and transmission, you'll need all the computer controls and associated wiring.
Popular mod is a Cummins into a Ford body, check out destroked.com (I think that's the right name). Post a bunch of pics if you do this project.

Mega dittoes on the Cummins. For ultimate reliability, find a '94-'98, 12 valve (Bosch mechanical injection), with torque plate for desired power level and a 6-speed, NV5600 hooked to a Dana 80 rear end.
We put almost 300,000 miles on our 12 valve with no issues. Didn't even have to add oil between 5,000 mile oil changes. Did valve adjustments every 25K miles, and only a few were off no more than .0001". Not bad for a spec of .010" intake and .020" exhaust. Half the moving parts and twice the bearing surface area of a Powerstroke. Hell of a motor...

I would also say ditto on the Cummins. Loved that engine over our current Powerstroke. But, stay away from the 5.9 w/ 53 cast block from Brazil if going with 24 valve (1998 - 2001-ish years?), this is one time Made in Mexico is a great thing. Trust me.

Good point!
Edit: More info on the 53 block. 12 valves OK.

I understood fully what you want to do. As long as EVERYTHING powertrain is in the donor, then your half way there. You may have a problem with the front suspension due to the weight of the PSD.
