Another new truck thread.
Hello all.
Own a 2011 ram 4x4 hemi that I finished paying for a few months back. It has the hemi and a few other extras that I use to tow a sprinter 266.
Looking at trading it in and have it down to two trucks. One is a chev duramax 2500ltz and the second is a ram Cummings 3500 dully.
The chev pros is, comes fully loaded with leather to climate controls and back up cam. The cons, payload I am told is 1850 which to me is not a lot more then the 1200 my 1500 has. A 10000pd camper could put 1300pds on the back leaving 500pds for gear. I weigh 250 myself so you see where I am coming from.
The rams pros is the 3300pd payload. Cons, is not fully loaded, air tilt cruise, power windows and locks but little else.
Price, I can get the chev for 60k and offered 20k for my truck.
Ram I can have for 52k and get 20k for my truck.
Thoughts?

Buy the dually... you don't need all the bells and whistles and you will regret buying the lesser payload if you go the Chevy..
I already have that tee-shirt...

I agree, GET THE PAYLOAD !!!!!
But, if the bells and whistles are what make you happy, GMC and Chevy both have diesel powered 3500 models with increased payload capability. Usually the price difference between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton is less than $1K. Often you can find 1 tons on the lot that are selling for less than a comparable 3/4 ton, so do your shopping "apples to apples" and, after comparing the pricing, go with your best deal.... But, GET THE PAYLOAD !!!!!

I agree, payload. Unless it's your DD all those extras you payed for are going to sit in the driveway. Having towed with both SRW and DRW...DRW hands down.

That payload seems real low for both trucks, might want to shop some more. Prices seem high as well. I am a Ford guy, did not look at dully but my 350 has a payload of 3,800 something and the 250's have one of around 3,200. I don't have leather or anything but the crew cab XLT is in the $42k range.
Not saying to get a Ford, but look around some more as you don't want to limit yourself down the road.

Thanks all for the tips and personally the payload was the way I was feeling as well.
Gary I did shop the fords but they were around the same price and I would have to special order. The dealer was trying harder to sell me an Eco boost that he had then get me the truck I wanted. The prices are in cdn dollars which could be why they seem high.

The 3500 will not only give you a bigger payload but also provide you with more flexibility if and when you want to go to a bigger RV.

$52,000CDN is currently $48,442USD.
Payload would be my choice, but I would shop around to get a Cummins with more options, if he really wants them. I've been a Cummins guy since 1994, and would never go back to any other truck. Just stay away from Chrysler automatic transmissions unless built, aftermarket ones. Suncoast builds a pretty good one that will handle however much torque you might have. I still prefer a 6-speed stick, though, and Dodge is the only brand currently offering a stick in a pickup.

I'm a Chevy man that owns a Ford. I would lean toward a 1 ton single rear wheel diesel. The Duramax and Allison combo is a good one. The Ford 6.7 diesel hasn't given me any problems and tows great. I am just too used to Chevy ergonomics and have to look for the cruise control buttons, and I have issues with some other Ford dashboard controls. Probably just me though. My F350 has a 3265 pound payload.

Hi x96mnn,
I'm sure you did your homework on capacity for those two very capable trucks, but the 1900 you stated for the Chevy is a little low. The 6.0 gasser has a max payload of 3150 and 2800 for the Duramax in crew cab 4WD. The numbers vary according to box length, tranny and cab configuration. Clearly this changes with the amount of passengers you have etc.
The 3500's do have some good capacities though.
Just my .02 cents worth.

I currently have a 2012 Dodge 3500 cc dually, it is a great tow vehicle. I have pulled with a chevy 2500 and a f250 my favorite so far is the Dodge. Dually makes long trips nice.
Thanks!

That payload is way low. My 2014 ram Laramie 3500 srw with every option available has 4076 payload. Sticker was 68 when I ordered it but got it for about 11k less than that

Thanks for pointing out my payload errors. I was looking at the payload numbers in kgs and not points so the chev is 3300pds and the dodge 6700pds. Still leaning toward the more payload.

Not sure about Canadian, but U.S. trucks have a yellow sticker inside the drivers door frame that gives the payload for that particular truck.
Something to look for when shopping. The manufactures brochures can be somewhat misleading, confusing, and purposefully vague on payload capacities. "Lots of astericks"

There's lots of truth in gearhead's statement: The brochure gives payload for a "base model" of the build series. In the Ford F350, that's a "stripped down" XL model. By the time you "add" packages, add carpet, add electric windows, add upfitter switches, add powerscope mirrors, add leather, add cruise, add running boards, add 4 wheel drive, add fifth wheel prep, add spray on bedliner....
With every "add" the payload goes down from the "brochure payload" and can easily be 1000 lbs or more under the "advertised payload"

Update,
I sat with the dodge dealer today but we could not work out a deal and I walked away. The truck sticker was 64000 and they had it on for 54000. They offered me 21k for my truck and dropped the price of theirs to 52. My offer was 25k plus tax plus my truck. The story behind the truck is the flare fender was damaged unloading and it was sent back to dodge for repair. Has 500kms on it.
The chev is more then I want to spend.
There is a used ford f350 single axel with 80000km on it that the ford dealer has on for 34k. I make think more on that one.

If your tight for cash this may be the better deal, but remember your trading used truck on a used truck and you won't get anywhere near the $20k that others offered on new.
As suggested I would try other dealers in your area if possible. You didn't post if this "dodge" truck was new or not, 2wd or 4x4...$31k? great deal if new, diesel and 4x4!
