Good surge protectors should block electrical current from flowing into your camper if anything is wrong, (wiring, low voltage, high voltage, etc.), and only allow power if everything is ok. It also protects against intermittent campground low voltage issues caused by circuit overloads. Camper units are sensitive due to the 12 volt, 120 volt combination which has sensitive components. It also helps prevent voltage overload from things like lightning strikes. New surge protectors go through a power check sequence before they will allow power to flow to your RV. The portable units work very well, the only down side is that they are subject to theft, not usually a problem most places, but the price of the surge protector may tempt someone, somewhere, sometime. I worried about theft the first time I used one but no longer give it much thought. Nearly all campers are good neighbors and RV owners tend to watch out for each other.

Another downside of the portable unit versus the hardwired one is, the portable unit plugged in at the pedestal can not see a fault or open condition in your shore cord, where the hardwired one inside your rig can and will stay open if your cord is not 100% good. We lost a ground prong on our 50 amp cord a while back, and even though the prong was still attached in the molded plug, it was broken inside the plug. When unplugging the 50 amp plug from a 50 to 30 amp adapter while trying to figure out why the ground was missing, the prong finally came out of the 50 amp plug and stayed in the adapter. This condition would not have been noticed by a portable EMS.

Doubly important if you have a power cord reel like our 5th wheel. There are brushes in the cord reel that transfer the for leads to the rotating dump and four connection points on each side of the drum(in and out). So additional places that neutral can be dropped and burn up all of ones AC devices with 240 volts across them.
