2010 Chev/GMC 2500HD Reliability

Hi all.
Looking at importing a 2010 diesel Chev/GMC 2500HD to tow our 299RK 5er.
Does the exhaust particulate filter / regeneration system give many problems?
Don't want the latest with the DEF issues as cannot be in limp mode in Australia's wide open spaces with very little backup. Quite a number of people with the later DEF fitted trucks are being stranded here.
Cheers
Jon

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think GM added DEF until 2011.

As for that, I've owned two 2011s, a 2500 and 3500 and it's a non issue. I add 5 gallons when needed. Typically get 3-4k miles per fill. With the miles I run it's a 2-3 time per year deal and I've never had an issue with the system.

My 2009 I have no issues with the DPF. You can smell it sometimes when it regenerates. But other than that zero issues.

07.5-10 have DPF (diesel particulate filter), GM started using DEF in 2011. DPF is basically like a catalytic converter that uses fuel to clean. The DEF is the urea that is added to a separate tank and injected into the exhaust to clean. Can you clarify if you are asking about the DPF which was in the 2010 or the DEF system in the 2011 and newer?

Hi Brent
It's the non DEF system truck I'm looking for, hence the 2010 model.
I'd prefer not having the DPF but the 2010's are a better truck and the 07's here are getting to high mileage / worn condition at a premium cost.
Appreciate your help.
Cheers
Jon

I guess I was either in too much of a hurry or half asleep when I read your original post, sorry for the confusion. I have trouble understanding why people are getting stranded, you can run over 3k miles on a tank and it gives you plenty of warning, about 500 miles, to add. That comes down to poor planning on their part!

I have a couple friends with the DPF trucks and have never had a problem.

As for mileage on older trucks, I've seen several 04-06s that have under 100K miles on them. My dad has an 06 with 72K, but they are getting fewer and further between.

Personally, I will never buy another truck older than 2011. I don't have a problem with the DEF and I love the integrated trailer brake system (I think it was available on earlier years as well) and exhaust brake. I know these can be added to an older truck, but the factory system works great and I think GM just keeps getting better with each new version of the dmax.

You need the "ultra-low-sulfur diesel" on these trucks unless you do a DPF delete. If you use the "regular" diesel you are going to have a lot of problems....

Where can you get regular diesel? Is ULSD only a US thing?

I know USA and some countries in Europe use it, but it is different in Mexico, Central and South America . I have no idea what they use in Australia.

Low Sulphur.
It seems that most of the DEF problems are about the tank & its sensors.
Like you guys we have extreme weather conditions too - mostly heat.
Cheers

Never heard of that one before. GM had a recall a couple years back do to problems with cold and freezing, but have never heard of heat problems even in areas such as Arizona.

If it's low and not ulsd that might explain the problems which you could have on a lmm too. I have a 2010 in the US and have had no problems . Only complaint was the fuel tank size but I got an aftermarket one. Oh and i wish i had an turbo brake like the 2011+ lmls.

The exhaust brake and 36 gal tank on the 11's are nice. My dad has an 06, that little 27 gal tank is irritating!
