Mattress Topper

Looking to buy a mattress topper for our "short queen" bed in the RV. Interested to hear your recommendations and experiences.

I bought a short queen topper for a different RV from Camping World on clearance, it was still $150, but it was comfortable. Made the DW happy on that horrible mattress.

We just had a 4" 'topper' delivered.
Haven't had a chance to try it yet, maybe this coming weekend.

Got one from CW. It's about 8 inches too wide and about 4 inches too long but I think a good pair of scissors will fix that. Looking forward to trying it out soon

I've found that an electric carving knife will make a much cleaner cut than scissors when trimming a mattress topper to fit a smaller size bed. Mark the foam with a sharpie and a straight edge, so you don't "free-hand a curve"...

I bought a myPillow mattress topper and it has been great so far. Has saved me the cost of a new mattress. If you measure your mattress and call them they will make you a custom size for your mattress. It was a little more spendy than some (appx 300 dollars) but the comfort and being able to sleep all night is worth it to me.

This is the best way. I have cut down at least 6 mattress toppers over the years using an electric knife. Make sure that the knife stays parallel to edges so that you end up with square cuts.

As an aside, my wife didn't appreciate me using her electric knife (I didn't tell her in advance). She got it in her head last Thanksgiving that the turkey had a rubbery taste to it because I didn't clean the blades correctly. I then posited that perhaps it was the chef's culinary skills that accounted for the taste. I sure miss her! (only kidding).

We went to The Original Mattress Factory and they custom made us an RV mattress for $400.00. It is a million times better than the crap that Keystone installs.

This or consider a full size queen mattress, we have one in our 2005 Copper Canyon, it is a tight fit when our bed slide is in, but the slide closes fully.

Our factory mattress (residential queen) is 6” thick, a bottom layer of 1” foam, a middle layer of 4” high density foam and a top layer of 1” foam. We added a 3” gel infused memory foam topper and it works great for us. I was thinking I might unzip the mattress and rearrange the internal layers to make it even more comfy (4” on the bottom and the two 1” layers on top)

After almost 2 years now, we just replaced the original factory installed mattress in our Montana High Country 5er. In prior campers, we tried mattress toppers, and ended up just getting new mattresses eventually. We have found, toppers just suck! They slide around, we were constantly fighting with them, and they never quite fit the mattress right.

In prior travel trailers we ended up replacing with Serta sleeper's, truly nice mattresses. However, this time, our son persuaded up to fork over some money and get .... truly ... the most comfortable mattress you'll ever sleep on .... with truly a magnificant price tag. But what the heck! We went for it. Nothing but the best in our camper.

So we ordered a Helix mattress Click here. We've slept on it 2 nights now, and WOW! It's all foam, no springs, and 11 inches thick. You can get them customized in different levels of firmness to fit your needs.

I'm just guessing, but i imagine they could custom size one also, as they manufacture the mattress after you order it. Apparently, when we ordered, they make them when the order comes in. They do not stock pile them. Make 'em, ship 'em immediately.

After a life-time of trying to squeeze extra life out of crap and junk that just don't cut-it, just get a new mattress and forget the topper. Spend the money and sleep comfortable.

On Edit:
Funny, My parents 1963 Phoenix Travel Trailer came originally factory fit with foam mattresses. In it's day, these were considered junk mattresses, and no one would ever use one in a house. I remember as a kid, sleeping on those (same stuff you might find on camper dinette seating cushions today). They were about 4 inches think, and they were very comfortable.

Now today, these foam mattresses have made a return and now considered "luxury." All I know is, the one I got is amazing.

If your foam mattress is anything like what we've had, taking the layers apart is near impossible. Even if you could, the 1" layers are "foam" (not cooling foam) and they will make for a HOT, HOT sleeping experience. The mattress pad, made of gel foam, likely has "cooling gel" which helps eliminate the HOT, HOT sleeping.... Take a look at what you've actually got and don't make matters worse by trying to "sleep on hot foam"...

Mattress topper

I bought normal king for rv. Much cheaper than rv topper. Very easy to cut using cheap electric carving knife. Check yahoo for videos. Don't forget "measure twice cut once"

I ordered one from MyPillow on 03/09. Haven't received it yet. Multiple calls and emails, and the answer is 'we're backlogged'. 17 weeks and counting...

I bought a 4" memory foam topper from Mattress World to sit on the factory Keystone mattress and for $200 it is VERY comfortable even 10 months later. it fits the bed perfectly but I have one complaint as mentioned in the comment above - it slides around every time I climb in and out of bed and constantly has to be pushed back into position almost daily which as most of us know who change bed sheets in our wrigs is not the easiest task considering most bedroom configs. wish there was a way to keep it in position aside from building a hard edge siding which will add weight and take up precious room not to mention trying to ease my 56 year old bod over it without getting a major "sanding". while not a huge problem at the end of the day it has become a common source of irritation.

Smile Mattress Topper

I bought one from Amazon for $60.00 for the trifold Murphy mattress in my Passport that was horrible. I just got it in February and have used it several times. It is only 2.5 inches thick because I wanted to be able to fold it into the wall with the mattress, and I was afraid to get one any thicker. Wiith a padded mattress cover, my bed is awesome! I am like the "Princess and the Pea", so I feel everything. The topper does not slide and fits the short queen perfectly. Hope the link works. Christie

I went the other route and removed the topper from the garbage OE mattress and discarded both. On the advice of many on social media, I purchased a Zinus 8" Queen short mattress from Amazon and it has proven to be a great substitute for my brick and mortar home mattress. The best part is that it's competitively priced against what a premium topper may cost.

This is the one I purchased. Fits like a glove and sleeps like the dead. The overwhelming responses in RV groups and forums do agree. Do a search.

I looked at those, but wasn’t at all confident that it would fold into thirds and I didn’t want to have the Murphy bed down permanently. Does it fold?

One of the first things I did was find a dumpster to throw the original in and I had a spare full queen size Sealy. Fits perfectly and lots of room to get by it.
