The Suburban IW60 owners manual says we are supposed to descale once every year - however I have not added the appropriate plumbing fittings and valves to do the descale. I have the diagram of the bi-pass that needs to be installed out in the RV. I need to find it and post it here. I don’t know if the other manufacturers recommend a descale or not…so this applies to Suburban models.
Basically you need two 5 gal buckets…one for a descale solution ( vinegar + water??), an inline 120 volt portable pump and some garden hose to hook up to the descale bipass loop you installed. Turn the valves (you installed) to isolate the descale loop (so that the descale solution will not run thru the RV plumbing). Turn the pump on and circulate the solution thru the innards of the water heater. You can find descale “kits” online for less than $200. I plan to buy the pieces and parts + pump at Home Depot for less. Some kits feature 12 volt pumps but I will go the 120 volt route. I need to figure out how to make my descale connections easy to access for the once-a-year cleaning operation. For what’s worth - tankless systems for the S&B are supposed to be descaled annually - but generally the kit is easily accessed and installed.
There is a current thread on the Montana Owners Forum about on demand water heaters. I posted the info below this morning. You can check the water temps on your unit for comparison.
