How I ended up with a dually: I weighed my SRW Ram with the Bigfoot camper on it.

Yep, quite the "researcher and fabricator" ain't he ???? In that article he says, "My SunLite 690 truck camper weighs 750 pounds dry and took some more creative engineering to make it fit in the bed of my Toyota Tacoma." Either he cut the cabover bed off the front or stripped/gutted the entire inside of his camper to "trim it down to 750 pounds". According to Sunlite (I had one years ago) the 690 weighs 1145 DRY. http://camping-trailers.com/sunlite-690.htm That's a far cry from his claimed 750 pounds, but overloading a TRD, well we all know that never happens.....

I know what TRD stands for but I keep having thinking scatalogical when I see TRD. Perhaps would not be my first choice for a truck camper although I had a Lance on top a base model F150 and didn't see an issue till I noticed the tires bulging. I did swap the tires for some LT but was so top heavy it was a tad nervous. I had never heard of payload at the time.

My brother in law, a retired GM Truck and Coach "die hard GMC owner" refers to Toyota Racing Division offerings a bit differently. He says, "TRD, the only thing missing is U."... When I first saw the emblems on a truck many years ago, I thought immediately to a "Japanese company which has no clue about what implications that emblem has with American slang".....

So, like you, it's difficult not to "think scatalogical" with that emblem... YMMV

This thread is going "DOWNHILL" fast, but since there's no "OP question" involved, and it's in the "odds 'n ends" section:

I'd just ask, is there special paperwork required with the TRD trucks, or does the same paperwork do OK ???? After all, no job is complete until the paperwork is done.....

Every pic I've see of truck frames bending/breaking with campers on them break/bend right where the front attachment points are for the camper. The only way i can imagine a frame breaking like that is becuase they welded or drilled into in that area.

And I've seen some where it wasn't the frame that bend/broke, but the truck bed that pulled up from the frame.

The PO of my dually 1 ton diesel RAM also had a camper on it before I got it, but, like others, the mounting points are bolted to the frame into predrilled holes so the frame isn't compromised.

The only thing I’m thinking a “TRD” is rated to tow.

Only if it's empty IMO.

We had a Lance that weighed 3650 dry and figured atleast 4500 loaded in a Chevy 2500 for years. I added Firestone air bags to remove sway and we also had a super hitch and pulled an 18 1/2 ft. Nitro Bass boat. The only problem we ever had was going over a bridge that had a big dip at about 65 mph I blew a valve stem out of the rim. Ran 10 ply tires at max air pressure.
