Ford pro trailer back up assist

Any thoughts on Ford's new Pro Trailer Backup Assist? Youtube has a video with the system on an F-150 and a boat trailer. Is it available on a F-350 and would it work for a 5th wheel?

The system, as Ford describes it, will "point the trailer in the proper direction" by using the "dash knob". From what they describe, the system is "aimed toward the novice trailer tower" or "the owner who seldom tows and isn't proficient at backing a trailer". It's only available in the F150 line (so far). The updated 2017 SuperDuty line has recently been released. In the initial information, there is a "similar, but not the same, trailer backup system. According to the literature, the SuperDuty system won't have all the capability of the F150. Ford explained that "heavy truck owners" tow more frequently and their engineers/marketing didn't feel the "full system" would be necessary and/or wouldn't sell.

So, essentially, no, the system is not available in current SuperDuty trucks and the "same capability" system won't be available in the new generation SuperDuty for the 2017 year. There will be a "limited version" available as an option, but no pricing/availability information has been released.

Personal thoughts: After all these years of backing trailers, I can't imagine changing to learn a "dash knob" technique, when it's so much easier to just do it like I always have......

Save your $$$................

Two hours in a parking lot with milk jugs for an obstacle course and you'll be a pro!

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE ! Put your hands at 5 and 7 o'clock wit your thumbs pointing up... now raise the thumb that points where you want to go.

Good Job!

I watched a video on this and it seems to work great. Backing up normally is not a problem with me, not sure it would help in my case. Anyone know what the cost is, that was my first thought it looks to be a pricey option.

And then when the system goes TU, is the driver unable to back up the trailer because he never really learned how?

Seems like another case of dumbing everything down so we really don't have to learn how to do anything by ourselves. i.e., cars that parallel park for you, premade meals that already have the potatoes peeled, carrots cut into tiny pieces and the meat chopped into squares so someone can say they "made the stew from scratch".

So how does it know when the boat is in the water and stop the truck? LOL
That would be something to see. LOL

I have always had the knack for backing a trailer. My wife on the other hand... we have a boat and if she backs the empty trailer down the ramp, well let's just say she would love this feature.

Not saying that just because someone cant back up a trailer is stupid. It's getting to the point where you dont have to look over your shoulder to see if there is a car beside you. You have a back up camera so you don't have to look behind you. You have a accident sensing system so you don't have to look in front of you. You don't have to step on the brake because the car will stop on it's own. Driving used to take skill. I can still parallel park a car without the camera. I look over my shoulder to change lanes even with the light in the mirror. I hate most of the new safety things on these cars because you dont get to control anything anymore.
