Trade-In Value

This could probably apply to any trailer, not just Keystone. We all know how important maintainence and condition are to preserving the value of out trailers, but is there an age point where a travel trailer would take a sever nose dive in trade-in value?

Bob -
If I were in the market for a used RV, I probably wouldn't consider anything older than 5 years. At that point, you are looking at replacing the tires and parts of the suspension and braking systems would also need a really close look at for wear and tear.
I know this doesn't directly answer your question but after 5 years I would expect to see a significant lowering of price in what folks are asking for their units and by default, what they might expect when trading it in.
There are those who say that there is a "severe nose dive in trade-in value" as soon as you drive the unit off the lot.
As you know, there are a few RV's out there that are 10 years old that look new and are almost as good as the day they were bought but the reality is that what the seller thinks their RV is worth isn't what the buyer is thinking.

So what does one do with a trailer nobody will buy? We prefer to keep our stuff until after it takes its last dying breath.

There are many charitable organizations that take cars, trucks, boats, RVs, etc. As donations. Some will appraise it, or you can have it appraised, and then deduct the appraised value off your income tax.

I have done this with a Falcon (my Houston go-to-work car) and a well worn-out Dodge pick-up. Very painless, and it makes you feel good!

I offer this as my experience... a few weeks ago I was offered $17K in trade-in value for my 2012 Passport 2890RL that I paid $20,875.

Now this was on a very heavily discounted 2014 333MKS, so keep that in mind.

We just recently traded in our 2009 Sprinter and was able to get between $12K - $13K for it. My parents just traded in a 2004 Sunny Brook and got around $12k for it. I think it all depends on what kind of shape it's in and how much in demand used units are in your area.

I just ran a couple models through NADA guides from new to 10 yrs old. They seemed pretty consistent that they lost $2-3K per year. Of course there was a little larger dip between the 2008-2009 model years, about $5k, so about double the normal loss for that one year. Of course that was 2 models from the same manufacturer so it is possible they did a significant change between those model years that accounts for the loss.

Just from what I've seen when shopping around, I think it's a lot like cars & trucks, the biggest dip is in the first year, then a slower drop, then a bigger drop around the 10 year mark.

I don't think there is any year they take a big dive other than the first year. Like others are saying, a big drop when you drive it off the lot, then 2-3000 year until around year 10 when they level off and don't loose all that much because it is already low. Trade in prices are irrelevant because that is just a game of how much they soak you for the new unit. Big trade in price goes with big profit on the new rig. Small trade in with big discount on new rig.

This is what I found out about used RV`s and trade in`s. Last September is when we traded in our `04 26ft Dutchman TT for our Passport. I`m pretty anal about my toys looking good and keeping up with any repairs. So with that, I thought my old TT was in great shape. When we worked out the deal with the dealer I found out after the 10 year mark this particular unit fell off the NADA value list. So we just got in a trade worth 5K and if we were to wait until this year we would have gotten nothing. So now for us, we will be trading in our Passport before the 10 year mark hits again so we can at least get a little money back out of it.
I also found out that on older units the dealers have a harder time selling them because the lenders will not finance an older unit. So it`s either done in house or you have to pay cash.

Bob/Javi you might look around in the PPL website and see if there is a unit comparable to yours and see what they're asking for it. PPL is a huge consignment lot in Houston. If you really want to sell it yourself it may be worth the tow down here from Austin/Waco.
