Building a bunk over my couch

I'm thinking of building a bunk over my couch in my Sprinter 5th. The back end has the couch that folds out. It also has the giant back window and windows on the sides.

Anyone try this?

I'm thinking I have 3 options:

1. Just build a free standing bunk over the couch.

2. Somehow mount L brackets on the wall and put a regular bunk in.

3. Somehow hang it from the ceiling.

I'm leaning towards the first one because I don't know how the structure of our campers are. Is it 1x2's or 2x4's for studs? What's in the ceiling? I know I can walk on it.....but are their ceiling joists running width wise?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure at all on the way to go, but option 3 would scare me.

It all sounds scarey to me. If I had to choose one it would be the free standing.

Years ago the upper cabinets over sofas and dinettes used to fold out to form a bunk. The front of the cabinets would actually unlock from the side walls and fold down to rest on 1x1 stringers attached to the walls. Then, a thin foam pad was unfolded to form a "mattress". Ours in the Jayco was nearly a 3/4 bed along the front wall and we slept two adults there at times.

If you're going to put some sort of folding bunk system in place, adequate bracing from side to side as well at attaching stops to each wall would give you adequate support for a light load. I wouldn't want to sleep adults (or large kids) on 1" foam pads suspended 18" down from the ceiling. But younger kids seem to find such "tree-house" camping to be enjoyable.... "OH MY BONES ACHE ALREADY" LOL

What did you end up doing to make a bunk? We have an existing bunk that has a capacity of 150lbs. We want to make a 200lb. capacity bunk.

You can find plans for a 4 post loft bed online. I built one for my little girl twin size mattress. Couch would probably fit in there under the bed maybe?
