Underbed Storage - Strut Issue

So, I have a gas strut issue I can't seem to find anyone else having. The struts on our underbed storage lid worked great until I added a mattress topper to the bed. With the topper/mattress in place, the lid pushes down when closed readily enough, but it does not want to stay down...you can tell its just waiting for the chance to come back up. if I were to slide the mattress/topper assembly slightly off center, (removing its full weight from the lid) up it comes.

Can these be adjusted or did I damage them somehow?

You can buy lighter ones. Just take the ones you have now to an auto parts store and they should be able to help. The odd thing about this issue is you added weight and say they want to come up more now. It should be the other way around. If you add weight to the bed it should resist opening more because it is extra weight to overcome.

Yep...that's what has me confused by this.
