He was a lucky guy. Says he was 25 from Missouri, wonder how much experience he had running that pass. If he had missed that the next thing would be flying out into space as he went straight thru the U turn at the lookout. That's a hill you don't want your speed to ever get away from you because you well might not get it back.

It's not just the "tight curvy passes" that can get you. There are a couple of curves (really turns) on Berthoud Pass and a couple around Steamboat Springs on Rabbit Ears Pass that end in 25MPH turns at the bottom. Heck, even heading east from Eisenhower Tunnel, toward Denver, as wide and "easy to travel" as it is, I 70 can "sneak up on you and send you over the edge"....

Any towing in the mountains should always include an extra measure of caution.....

Earl never had the luxury of a runaway ramp. That guy was lucky.

Have pulled and safely descended Rabbit Ears pass to Steamboat and Eisenhower tunnel down to Silverthorne and then Fremont pass to the Leadville and Arkansas headwaters areas several times and yes they are tricky and you have to keep your speed under control. I expect to tow Berthoud (this will probably wait depending on how bad the fires last year wiped out the Grand Lake and Granby areas) and Possibly Wolf Creek in the coming years. Southwest CO is a long drive for a weekend get away for us though.
