2005 chev diesel

Have a friend in the market for a truck and is looking at a 2005 chev 2500 LT 6.6 diesel 4x4. Truck is 4x4 and a 4 door with 216000 kms on it. Other then that cannot tell you much other then the exterior and interior looks to be in good shape.

What are some things he should look for or ask about? Is this a type he should walk away from? The asking price is 12k .

The 2005 Dmax is a very good truck. Not really too many things to be concerned about. The miles are high, but the price is set to match. Buying anything with that many miles, even a diesel, is a risk. If a person really wants a diesel and is limited on funds then I guess this is a risk they have to take. To be honest, when it comes to a Dmax, it's hard to find anything with under 100k for less than $25k

I have an '05 GMC 2500 Duramax/Allison 4x4 extended cab and haven't had any issues with it since buying it used in '09 (I think). Used to haul our Cougar, boat trailer and some commuting.

I'd ask to see any service/repair records if any are available but I'm not aware of any specific issues with this year/model and I see no reason why "he should walk away from it". I have heard that there have been some problems with the '04's but not sure what they are.

Brent, The OP said kms. thats only 130,000 miles .... just broken in.

I used one to tow my new 5er to the park as the parts for the hitch for my dodge had not come in. Well I did take some poking fun from the boys at the campground for my dodge not being able to handle it lol, I got my new camper to the park.

I was really impressed with how the chev pulled, it had about 260000km on it, was chipped and had Bridgestone airbags installed. My camper weighed about 12500pds and it had all the power you would ever need and was an easy one handed drive. Got to say it was impressive coming from a dodge man....not saying it was better lol but it was good.

Dang it, I noticed that when I read the post then completely forgot about it when I wrote my reply. In that case, $12K is a pretty good price for a dmax with just over 100,000 miles. I'd buy it as long as the body is sound

Pretty much anyone with a 2002 to 2007 Classic Chevy body style from 1500 to 3500 needs to do a full brake line inspection. It is a very common problem for these lines to bust especially while towing. I just had all of mine replaced and found one more power steering line issue as well.

05 is a good truck just watch the temps they tend to run a little hotter than the other model years.

I can't stress enough on the brake lines. There are so many issues most are shocked that gm hasn't issued a recall. Just google it and you will have a nice read for a day or so

This is the first I've heard of this, but I don't own one of those year trucks. Interesting reading. Going to have to let my dad and brother in law know about it since they both have trucks in that year range.

Yes I speak from experience as it sucks when your brakes are perfect then you press down and hear it blow and you have nothing. Luckily both times I was sitting still and parking

Very true. Had mine burst will towing. Had to use only my trailer brakes the last 60 miles home.

Some of the 04.5 and 05's had cooling issues, but otherwise are really good trucks. Injector setup is better than the 01-04 models and it doesn't have all the DPF stuff.

$12K sounds decent if it is in good shape.

All GMT800-900 trucks from 01-10 can have head gaskets issues. The problem lies in the gaskets themselves and can be multiplied by the 04.5-05 cooling problems or just simply by too much tuning. Grade C head gaskets and head stud will remedy this problem.
