In bed tank for GAS Ford truck question.

Has anybody added a GAS tank to the bed for a 2011+ gas Ford truck. Looking to add one but haven't found much info. Need to be able to add gas to the regular tank (gravity or pump) while running down the road and not throw a code on the computer.

Any of you gasser F150/250 guys do this yet?

I'm not a Ford owner but I have seen ads for larger in-frame fuel tanks. Would that be easier if they make one for your rig? Just a thought.

You must be loving that 26 gallon tank just like me!!

How big of a tank are you thinking?? Keep in mind of your payload.. I have been thinking about doing the swap to the 36 gallon tank.

It would be nice to have a little more capacity, but where do you draw the line? A custom slip tank is easy, but can kill payload as mentioned above.

Only looking at about 20-25 gallon in bed tank.

I'm really looking for the answer to the workings of the gas and vapor recovery system of our trucks. If I add a tank to the bed and plumb it into the filler neck, will it pressurize the in-bed tank or pull a vacuum while running down the road? Most of the stuff will be just like what is used in the boating industry. Not necessarily DOT approved but up to the boating worlds standard. I will use braided gas line, gas rated fuel pump and solenoid and all but wanted to know about the tank venting and how the computer will react to filling the tank while moving. I have filled the tank while the truck is idling at the gas pumps and it didn't throw a code, but I don't know about while moving. Anybody have any experience with that?

Some "skinny ladies" weigh more than that too !!!

25 gallons of gas is about 150 lbs, the tank and associated plumbing is probably 50-75 pounds so we're looking at about 200-225 lbs of added weight. For some half ton trucks, that's a bunch, but realistically, it's up to each owner to make that decision based on his payload, cargo weight and level of comfort.

I think I would look at a larger replacement tank. It will probably move the center of gravity back toward the rear of the truck, but if you don't get too carried away with capacity it should be manageable. I did it on the old class C motorhome. The fuel system was probably simpler, but it was fairly easy by myself. Went from 36 gallon to 55.

A little more pricier then a slip tank/transfer tank, but IMHO a lot safer! With one of these you don't lose any box space! You can also have dealer program truck's computer to have the fuel gauge set to new tank. My brother installed one in his 2013 F350, had dealer reprogram computer and no issues.

Transfer Flow Inc. here. Mine is a diesel but im sure it works for Gas. Its a 50 gallon Aux tank with about 6" deep storage box on top. It works great and has a gauge inside that digitally keeps track of how many gallons you have, both in the main tank and in the Aux tank. You can set it up to auto fill the main tank or do it manually.

My truck also has the 40gal aft axle tank so there are no issues with having to maneuver fuel stations when on trips.
