That is a lot of trailer for a 1/2 ton. I would not recommend towing with that truck.

How many 3/4 ton owners have heard the term "Oh hell, yeah, it'll tow it, no problem."
In our case, ours isn't a dedicated tow vehicle. It gets driven many more miles as a "grocery getter" than towing. Neither of us cared for the height and ride of any of the 3/4 tons, so we selected a TT that "grocery getter" would accommodate.
I guess you could say, it's all about priorities.

Yep... I tried letting the tow vehicle dictate the trailer.... never again, for us that was a miserable experience and a costly one as well.
But obviously our priorities were about comfort while camping and willingness to appreciate the need for the proper tool for the job.

Different strokes for different folks

Ram 3500 Cummins

Thanks for all the guidance here. Playing it safe and bought the 3500 Diesel Dually. First trip in few weeks. I’ll feel much safer with this and driving two trucks (2005 Toyota Tacoma-not for towing) will allow us to bring kayaks and bikes. Happy camping!

Wow, great looking truck, congrats! Now you can buy whatever trailer you want to roll with and be set! Ha.

Question, isn't payload based on stock tires and suspension? Those can all be upgraded can't they?

They can but only if by a shop that lcan egally change the trucks certification. Otherwise the OEM sticker is the "legal" limit.

I have learned over the years to buy more than you think will ever need because 6 months down the road you will end up having to upgrade. It ends up being cheaper that way.

Your available payload is actually the GVW of the truck less the actual weight of the truck at the moment. The door sticker is for reference and represents the weight of the truck as it left the factory, along with a full tank of fuel and a 150lb allowance for the driver.

The real limit, though, is the GVW set for the truck. You should never load the truck such that the weight of the truck exceeds that limit.

Note that there are other limits as well (besides GVW) but this question was specifically about payload.
