Moved Up to A Dually !
Had a 2018 GMC 3500 with 6.6 Duramax etc and scale and specs said it was enough for towing my 38 foot Fuzion toy hauler . But fully loaded and being within 250 lbs of being maxed out just didn't sit so well. It made 3 years without one issue and towed fantastic without a trace of an issue but..... decided that the new 2020 GMC's with the Denali package and dual rear wheels would allow us to truly tour worry free. So we took delivery on Saturday. She fits in my shop a bit snugger but fits with room to spare. And she has amazing new options compared to just two years ago. Now the secondary spending starts. New hitch adapter. New Tonneau cover (8 foot box vs 6.6), 3m coating on front. My wife just laughs and goes. Spend! Spend ! Spend! Sure is a beautiful truck.

Congrats on the new truck. Nothing like pulling a big trailer with a Dually. Welcome to the 6 wheel club.

Sounds like a good truck. The new GMC HD trucks look a lot better than the Chevy HDs, that's for sure.

Yes, not worrying about weight is very nice. We went from a situation with a 2001 Ram Laramie 2500 CTD with a 5 speed manual and 3.55's had RV 275 injectors amd a small chip maybe 300 hp 610# torque, likely a little less. Was 1,700# over GVWR, but within axle ratings.
Now have close to that to spare, and while this is also a Laramie WAY nicer than the old TV.

Thanks I had my GMC 2018 3500 Duramax and I loved that truck but for long haul touring north america I will just be happier and sleep better with a dually. Also took me all of 20 min to get used to that big butt sticking out in side mirrors. She runs beautiful, can't wait to try with trailer although last truck pulled it like it wasn't there too. LOL

I’ve been considering going to a dually but I love my truck. 06 Dodge Megacab with the 5.9. I know, not a GMC but I am a Mopar guy. I’m currently at the weight line for tow but cargo is over a bit. I added airbags but I’ve been looking at changing out my axel and bed to a dually. I just don’t know if it would pull any better. Does a dually pull, ride or just work better for a 5th wheel? I’ve got an Avalanche 356MB so it’s 40’ and 12.5k dry.

Mongo,
I have an 03 3500RAM with the 5.9, automatic with about 160K miles. Currently I tow a 42' Montana at about 13K pounds. But, it is sluggish on hills. Level ground it does fine.
Do you recommend any upgrades to this truck? I want more power, but don't want to exceed the capabilities of the transmission. Things I am considering are injectors, another turbo, changing the rear end (now a 3:73), maybe going to a 4:10.
I can't afford all these things, so what is the best bang for the buck so I can tow up hills better?

AbHDToyhauler Your Lucky, I wanted to wait for a 2020, but my 2013 had some engine trouble that was too much to repair, so I had to get a 2019 GMC DRW....I have a 3895 43ft Toy Hauler...You will love how it handles even when the winds have every other signal wheel truck pulling over....

Apology - I was wrong
So, I owe someone here an apology. Maybe more than one of you. I so much thought that my F350 turbo diesel would be enough for a 5th wheel. Nope After doing all the required math, we discovered that yes, it will pull it, but not safely and most certainly be over gross. Alas... we settled for the Carbon36 instead of one of the Carbon 5th wheels I was drooling over. We don't have a dually. Yet.
Lesson learned. All that being said, so far we love the new toyhauler and will take it out for the first time this weekend. Albiet, I will need to widen the driveway a bit....
