Brakes

Since I have been a few issues myself with my brake controller I have been reading a lot of postings on this issue as well as searching on Google. I have an older Hayes model Brake Controller which the manual application seems to have quit working. I recently adjusted the breaks and I can hear power getting back to brakes, as well as the brakes feel like they are grabbing when moving in driveway. The manual slide does not seem to activate the brakes. I've racking my brain over this. Bottom line would not the manual slide be used iin emergencies? And with everything else going during an emergency going down the raod is anyone really going to have time to apply the manual slide when the trailer brakes are operating proportionally with your tow vehicle breaks. Or if anyone has any experience with Hayes brake controllers I would appreciate it.

Not familiar with the Hayes controller, but I would never want to manually apply the trailer brakes independent of the truck, as that could cause a jack knife problem. It's much better to have the entire braking system work together. and for you to keep both hands on the wheel in an emergency. This is the web site for Hayes, and may have a contact number for product support. http://www.hayesbc.com/

I can't see where manually applying full brakes with the controller will cause a Jack knife. If you lock up the trailer brakes, your just dragging a huge chunk of dead weight.

I have had to do it a few times when a rude driver decides they need to pass me at 75 to make the off ramp 100 feet ahead. I no longer do it, I just maintain speed through and apply full TRAIN HORNS

I may be misunderstanding this so apologies in advance. It is my understanding that the manual brake application is to be used to correct/control trailer sway. I agree with Bobbecky that you would not have time nor would want to use it in a panic situation.

Chuckster. I do give you cred for style points! How hard are full on locomotive horns to install?

Including fabricating and powder coating the cage for the horns, about 4 hours. I have 5 gal of air and can maintain full volume (153db) for 11 seconds..Long enough for you to realize you goofed
