Adding Shore Power.....

I guess technically, it's not a mod to my new Toy Hauler, but I am in the process of installing a 50A shore power hookup in my detached garage. I have a 100A 120/240V service in the detached garage and I'm going to have a way to plug in the T.H. when/if I need to. The T.H. is parked right next to the detached garage, so it will be a pretty easy mod to do.

Re: Adding Shore Power.....

Thanks for the link trucker LOU. Pretty good info for the DIYer, although I really recommend that folks who do not have the proper training in the Electrical field, get a professional Electrician to do something like this.

Re: Adding Shore Power.....

I am not ele inclined a friend helped with my 50 amp service when he was finished it was 220 something you don't want. I took it out my self and put 30 amp with number 6 wire, My 30 amp runs 1 AC and keep the Rv batters charged. I bought a 30 to 15 amp adaptor and use a heavy 10 amp extension cord for general use if I needed the AC I would have to drag out the 50 amp cord. this is what I used with a 30 amp breaker. http://www.myrv.us/Imgs/PDF/30-amp%20Service.pdf

Actually, a 120/240 VAC shore power system is Exactly what I want.....the same exact thing that you would plug into at a Campground/RV hookup for the 50A service. The 50A service provides you with two (2) separate 120VAC circuits, via a NEMA 14-50 receptacle....just like the ones at the campgrounds/RV parks.

Actually, the 50 amp RV service is exactly the same as household systems. The 50 amp receptacle is a standard 240/120 volt 50 amp 14-50 NEMA receptacle.

The only difference between the RV and house is, the RV's breaker panel is configured to only provide 120 volt branch circuits. Unlike household breaker panels, where the two hot legs are next to each other allowing for a double breaker to provide 240 volts, the RV's panel has the legs away from each other. Aside from that, they are identical. The service coming into the 50 amp camper is standard 240/120 volts. Nothing special.

The receptacle that the 50 amp RV plugs into is not special for the RV, it is very much standard.

Highland is a very nice little community, you probably made a great choice in moving/living there. It's kind of funny....my wife's brother lives in Maryville, IL and we live in Maryville, TN. Up there it's pronounced.. Mary Ville. Down here, it's pronounced....Murvil.

Back on topic......So I finished up the Shore Power install this morning, double checked all my connections for accuracy as well as proper torquing of all the terminal screws. Got out the 50' cord that plugs in to the trailer and did that and into the new receptacle in the garage and let it start working. I love it when a plan comes together.
