Overloaded ?

I ran across this photo on one of my other forums. I would love to know the story behind it, thought may be someone on here might know.

I do not know the story behind the photo. After checking to many overloaded trucks on scales, I have always said that I never seen a frame or truck break in half from over weight (just about all other parts) until now.

I've never seen one either. I wished it had a view of the front, I'm wondering if he didn't rear end another vehicle.

The camper, an Okanagan, is made in Penticton, BC, Canada. It looks to be about 11'-12' and has a slide out so it would weigh a few kilos (whoops, pounds) - probably around 4000-4800 lbs depending upon options. Hard to tell how long the trailer is but it looks like a tandem and who knows what's inside!

Without seeing the whole picture - what's in front of the truck and behind the trailer - we'll all be guessing as to what the cause might be.

My guess is that the truck belongs to some crazy Canuck (Canadian) who was hauling a load of hockey pucks across the Prairies and collided with a moose. Whatcha say, eh?

On our 72 Dodge we had an 11.5' Harvest camper. The rear bumper was an "extension bumper". When the truck was solo, it pushed in and looked like a "normal, old armorplate bumper with the dealer's name stamped into it. When we loaded the camper there were four 3/4" bolts to remove and the bumper could be extended to sit under the edge of the rear of the camper. There was a trailer ball on the bumper and I "ONCE" tried to hitch a small 14' fishing boat/trailer and 5HP outboard to it. With the bumper extended almost 4' behind the tailgate, all that weight of the overhanging camper and the added couple hundred pounds of the boat trailer, it seemed like the front tires were possibly touching the ground every other rotation. Even without power steering we could turn the steering wheel with one hand. LOL and... We could easily hunt squirrels at night with the headlights, that's for sure !!! LOL And that was nothing compared to what's shown in this picture !!!!!

I'd suppose that extending the tongue as he did serves the same purpose, and I'm sure it had the same effect on the truck. No doubt it wasn't a really "road loving" rig......

My DW and I were reminiscing a while back and both of us made the comment that if we'd ever had a blowout on that truck at 70MPH....... Luckily, nothing like this picture ever happened, but I think we may have been "prime candidates" for this kind of damage.

Howdy All;

I throw my speculations into the basket with the rest.
I used to have a slide in camper and an 1985 F-250 to lug it around.
Had to install a set of overload springs to keep it from bottoming out
and I also had to have attachment points wielded on so I could have
a place to secure the tie down chains. Could it be that the owner did
the wielding them-self (?), used to much heat for to long and weakened
the steel in the frame?
The front tie-downs are the ones that act as the clamps that hold the
camper in the bed the ones in the rear only keep it from sliding out and
the back end from bouncing oop n down.
Thinking about the lever and fulcrum principal wouldn't the lengthening
of the fulcrum actually decrease the amount of tongue weight (???),
unless there is 4 tons of weight in the nose of the trailer. Double axle
Cargo trailers can be as short as a single Horse Horse trailer. or for regular
ones they generally start at 12 feet. The one in the photo appears to be one
designed to haul cars and is probably close to 20' in length.
Just my 2/5's of a nickle...

A friend of mine just bought a 5000# camper with three or four slides for his Duramax dually. He bagged it and installed a rear sway bar (strange that it didn't have one to begin with). He leaves today for a test trip towing a trailer with two quads. I wished him luck...

The 10ft floor Artic Fox 990 truck camper had a weight of about 3700lb and loaded with 70 gal water 2 30lb propane tanks 2 batteries, food, clothes, guns, ammo, for 2 people for a week of dry camping it was around 4400lbs. And I did have 2 rear tire blow outs, 1st was at low speed after traveling 1 hour. 2nd was at 65-70 on the interstate. No crashes guys, just DO NOT STAND ON THE BRAKES, coast to shoulder. Thats when I learned about metal valve stems and why the rubber ones or not for heavy loads. ( In my opinion on any heavy vehicle).

We were assigned to Edwards AFB when I bought our Dodge. The GVW was 7500 lbs and the Harvest camper weighed almost half that...So we were well past "overloaded" every time we sat in the seat. LOL As a young kid with no RVing experience, I believed the salesman when he said, "Hey, it's the camper model truck and it's designed to carry a camper". Little did I know that what it was really designed for was a small 8' cabover without all the "goodies", maybe 1800-2000 lbs.

We camped all over the desert from Las Vegas to Bakersfield in that thing, drove most anywhere there was a road, overheated going up the Grapevine and sat on the side for a while until we could "try it again". We even lived in it in the neighbor's back yard after we checked out of housing when we were leaving. It was me, my DW and a 6 month old baby. It's a miracle we didn't "self destruct" as overloaded as we were. Good fortune was definitely on our side during those years. That's probably part of why I don't push it with overloading any more, I know my "allocation of luck" has already been used a couple of times over.... LOL

I miss the old cabover. Sure was nice for hunting trips to the mountains. I had it on a "light" F250. It had a 250 front end but a 150 rear suspension. Exactly what I didn't need. First big trip we were in eastern Oklahoma with the wind howling. I really thought it was going to flip over. Oncoming traffic would get off on the shoulder! I added Sears overload springs after that. It had the old 300 six cylinder with a 4 speed, granny gear. We made several elk hunting trips to Colorado, with the camper and pulling a cargo trailer. Those long pulls between Sante Fe and Pagosa Springs...downshift to 3rd and floorboard it.
I tried to talk the DW into a Lance before we got the Cougar. No and NO some more.
This one sure looks interesting.....

I would say that maybe the frame had some corrosion issue but if you look at the rear fender's it's a newer Ford because they are rounded fender's. But too me he had it WAY overloaded, and IMHO it was a pretty stupid idea on the owners part. So now a probably $60K+ truck is scrap metal other than the engine and driveline.

Hansel, Howdy;

If the owner is into "cobbling" things together then they'll jack up the bent
section and wield it back together with some more steel lapped into the
frame. Reckon we'll be seeing more of this one...

A good frame shop would be able to straighten this out and beef up the frame also. It will cost you and arm and leg.
yes thats the new dually 6.7psd wheel wells. Not sure which year but at least a 2010 or newer?
That gives chucking a whole new meaning.
, I take the whole drivetrain for my 2003.

Well I guess it's the same thing when they cut a frame too make a Limo out of a car or SUV.
