SoCal boondocking

I know enough to hit the BLM's site for specific regions to find boondocking areas, but their listings amount to undeveloped campgrounds.

Can someone give a clearer explanation of where one can set up camp within BLM lands? For example, at Red Rock Canyon near Mojave, there's a State Park campground, but one reviewer stated that one can camp on BLM land a few miles away. I couldn't find info on the BLM site that clearly outlined where I could camp near Mojave.

My followup question is: What good boondocking spots are there in SoCal? A Google Map link would be appreciated, or even a PM if you don't want the whole world finding your favorite spot.

Thanks! I've read your blog, and hers before. I've followed some of her links, but just her one post at least provides coordinates. It looks like I'll have to do that legwork and/or call the field offices.

For your trip, did you just drive into the State Park and cruise around until you found a spot? How did you know that spot was legal?

I had read about some spots on the internet, various blogs, etc. But when I got there ,though spread out, there were many rigs already boondocking. Last week during the New Years holiday there were hundreds. There is an ATV, dirt bike area off State Hwy 22 near the turn off from Hwy 86 at Salton City and man the place was packed!
