Just Ordered New Truck

Today I ordered a 2012 Silverado 3500 Crew, LTZ, SRW, Z71, 4WD, 4:10 axle, gasser (yes gas), silver ice metallic. I'm stoked. Now I just have to sit it out and wait.
I was at the max GVWR & GCWR with my 2500 and felt it would be good to upgrade. I'm gonna love that 36 gallon fuel tank (gonna need it too).
I will be sure to post pics and boast when she arrives. The sad thing is that it cost more than the 2010 5er.

good luck with it.

For work I drive gmc savanna vans with 6.0. the guys put 185,000+ miles on them with very few problems. I have had 8 of them since 1997. When I went to buy a pickup- off the gmc dealer I went- only to find the dash looked like my van dash. and I wanted something different.

dare I say I bought a ford 2011 f-250- gasser with a 6.2

I have been very happy with it. at 65-70 empty I get 16-17 mpg. towing the 5th wheel I get 8 mpg. it pull the hill fine but it does down gear a lot.

Have just over 10K mi on our 2011 F350 Diesel now, seems to have leveled out with the mileage, 11.7 towing, just shy of 18 without. Love the truck, thing hardly works at all pulling our SRX. Time to get the DEF again, last time bought it at NAPA.

I misseed this post before. Steve, I gotta ask, why the gaser? That makes no sense to myself personally. I am just curious.

I have a 2011 ford f250 6.4 gasser as well-
1. saved over $6000 at time of purchase.
2. gas is .40 to .50 per gallon cheaper.
3. no def to add
4. oil changes are $35.00
5. highway mileage empty- 16-17 at 70-75 mph
towing the 5th wheel I'm 8-9 mpg.
6. can set the cruise control at 70 and it pulls it on the hills just fine.

The diesel has more power- but you pay for it. I think it would take over 100,000 miles to make up the fuel savings of $6000.

Now if you are towing something 15 to 20 k or you pull you trailer more than a few weeks a year I think the diesel would out last the gas motor.

Where did you get the .40 to .50 cents a gallon difference?

Both my wife and I fill our vehicles up with diesel. We pay between .03 and .05 cents a gallon more. (She has a 2011 Jetta TDI)

We went out west this year an at every station, I was paying between .05 and .10 cents more for diesel than gas at the major truck stops.

My oil changes cost me $45.62 (3 gallons of oil and filter) and I also know that it is done right. I also sample my used engine oil to see what is happening to the engine has far as engine wear. This is an optional expense of $21.00, but worth it.

By the way, buy a DODGE Cummins engine equipped pick-up truck. They do not require UREA (DEF). This summer my fuel mileage when pulling out west in the mountains had a low of 10.95 with a high of 13.85 MPG. My average was 12.37 MPG for most mountain driving. Without the camper attached I had a high 0f 20.34 MPG. This is for a 2008, 6.7L Cummins that is certified to meet the 2010 Tier IV emissions.

today in my town- diesel 3.71 reg-3.37. we must have more tax on diesel in NJ.

Up here in Ontario in my area gas is 1.30 litre or 4.92 per US gas.
Diesel is 1.20 Litre or 4.54 per US gal.

Using Dave-G mileage numbers and the mileage I get from my sig truck(granted it is non emmission and last of the best)

I would save approx 3300.00 in 20000 towing miles.
My towing mileage is 30- 40% better and highway 10-20%.

My truck has 200,000 miles on it and will have paid for the extra cost of the diesel option several times over in this mileage. This truck will easily go this many miles again before getting tired.

If I was buying a new truck, with a lesser amount of towing, I would give much consideration to a gasser considering the horendous cost of diesel engines gone wrong with all the new emission crap.

Diesel fuel is running about the same as supreme unleaded, which is about
$.30 more than regular around here.

I can understand choosing a gas engine over a diesel. It all comes down to personal preference.

Empty mileage is comparable either way. Loaded, the diesel wins. Pulling wise, I think the current diesels will outpull their brands current gas offering.

Everyone complains about how expensive maintenance is with a diesel. Yes, oil changes are more expensive (more oil capacity and better filtering cost more). But when you can extend out change intervals, it becomes a wash.
Both have fuel filters that should be changed every 10K miles. Beyond the occasional tune up, there isn't much that needs to be done with the modern diesel engine.

I don't understand the big deal about having to use DEF. I use more windshield washer in the wintertime and during peak bug season than what a gallon of DEF sells for.

I love my Cummins, even more that it is now emissions deleted. There is nothing like the straight pipe sound pulling 12K lbs up a steep grade. But diesels are not for everyone.

Cummins will not be going with DEF on the non C&C trucks in the forseeable future.

I have heard 99% good things about the dodge and gm diesel. the ford 6.0 is another story.
I really like the Cummings motor- but had such problems with 2 mini vans of the wife's I do not think I could give dodge any money again.

I looked for a used gmc with a diesel for 4 months and could not find what I wanted. Had a 35-40 k budget.Lots of fords but- they seem to have problems around 90-100k with head bolts and injectors.

I ended up with a new 2011 f250 6.2 gas lariat crew- short bed- loaded- (less nav and sun roof) for 41 out the door.

I only use the truck for pleasure- weekends- I'll put 8k a year on the truck.

The last fill-up of diesel for my truck on 11-Sept-11, was $3.78 a gallon and gas was $3.76 a gallon.

I have gone round and round with this one. I buy a new truck every three years. I maintain them very well and always sell myself, hence I always get good return on sale. I drive about 20k per year and only tow the fiver about 3k per year. Doing the math, this does not justify the additional up front cost of $8k for the Dmax. I have had no problems whatsoever towing my 12k lb. fiver with the 6.0 gasser and 4:10 axle. I use a afrermarket tuner and this gives me the power I need, without the added maintenance costs of diesel. With my tuned 2008 gasser, I average 9.0 towing and 13 not towing. The additional 3 mpg I would get w/Dmax doesn't compensate for the extra $.50/gal diesel cost. That is my reasoning and it works for me.
So I posted about my new truck and everyone is talking about their diesels. I don't get it.

What started out as a post from therink about his new gas truck, this thread has now come full circle and has appropriately concluded with a post from this same member. In between, posts have appeared dealing with fuel prices, cost of DEF, mileage and MPG, gas vs diesel, and very little about his new truck.
