Satellite phone?

Anybody have experience with one? Can anybody recommend an affordable one that works well?

We had Iridium at NASA. Seemed to have less issues than than others I have heard about. Not an expert on them, though. The Comm Tech would let me borrow it occasionally and it always worked as advertised from wherever we were.

We also had one in the jet. Figuring what numbers to dial was the biggest challenge.

The key word is AFFORDABLE. for the average camper a sat phone isn't affordable. Typically they are used by well funded entities ie. government, military, and research groups traveling in very remote areas for long periods.

Our neighbor in Tennessee has the Iridium phone and package (company phone of course) and he said the phone was about $1200 and service runs about $2.00 a minute.
