Sleeper Slide Out

I own a 327 RES Cougar. For those of you who own one you will know what I'm talking about. The overhead is very low. My 5er came with a really nice mattress, on top of this the DW and I have a 4 inch memory foam overlay on top of it. (We had purchased for our other trailer, not so nice mattress). My question is has anyone removed their mattress to open the box that encloses the slide out mechanism. I was wondering if there was enough room to cut down the box a little to lower the mattress at the same time providing a little more head room when lying down. Every once in a while I knock my head when lying down, not so fun.
