If the trailer running lights come on with the tow vehicle parking lights (and they should if wired correctly), then you have power to the center rear running light which, in most trailers, powers the camera. Turning on the headlights won't make it any "better or worse"....

How did you do locating the camera hookup wires?

Picked up our 22rbs a couple days ago. Tech told me to drill 2" below the center marker light and fish up towards the light. Curious what you and others found to be the case.

Yes that works (eventually), but all wires are white, so have to test wires to figure out which to connect to. Wound up drilling into metal frame in that hole for ground.
