Our Laredo has a tall, pull out drawer located in the kitchen island that is meant to hold a trash can. The DW likes this feature as it hides the trash can without her having to lose the storage space under the sink.
The problem with this is that the can is not resting on the floor, but on the sliding drawer. The weight of the can is never an issue, but, pushing down on items being placed in the trash puts downward pressure on the drawer guides which in turns loosens the screws.
To cure this, I cut some 1/2" (actually 15/32) plywood - 3 13/16" X 12". Then mounted the plywood to the underside of the drawer bottom using two very small hinges. The plywood is mounted within 1/8" of the drawer front and is hinged on the back side. Had to add a layer of Luan to the inside of the drawer bottom so it was thick enough to hold the screws.
When the drawer closes, the plywood folds up. The 1/2" thickness allows it to pass between the bottom of the drawer and the bottom cabinet frame. Placing it as close to the drawer front as possible prevents it from dropping down on the inside of the frame.
This allows the DW to "compact" the items in the trash without stressing the drawer guides. The plywood was cut narrow enough that the wooden "flipper" doesn't scrape the floor but only allows the drawer to be deflected downward about 1/16".
Now she doesn't have to remove the trash can to push down on the contents.
I know that would not be a big deal to most, but, I thought it was a nice nod toward convenience. "A happy wife makes for a happy life"
