air conditioner freezing up
My brother-in-law has a 2006 Everest and the air conditioner seems to freeze up. Could this be because of low Freon or something else?

Check for a filter on the air inlet. It might be dirty enough that there isn't sufficient air flow.

Did that and washed the unit out.

Does it have louvers to close off the main vent and force the air into the ducts? Try opening it when the AC is going full blast. (Day time) They will freeze if there is not enough air flow.
Since it is cooling enough to freeze, I don't think it is low freon.

Low freon is a cause of icing., but unlikely. These units only hold about a pound of charge and any type of leak at all will cause a complete loss of freon. Then there would be zero cooling. The refrigerant circuit is a sealed system and freon does not use itself up or go away except through a leak.

Take down the inside cover and make sure that the foam separator that separates the warm and cold side of the unit is both in place and correctly sealed with tape. Our unit worked only OK at best and the condenser would start to freeze over causing loss of air flow thru the evaporator after reinstalling the foam separator and sealing the gaps as they should be the system works very well. Remember that the foam is installed by Keystone when the AC is installed so the workmanship may not be so good

Thanks for the responses. I just told him to trade it in for a newer model.
I'll have him check to see if some of the vents are closed.

Restricted air flow or running on low fan would be my guess. Try leaving it on high fan for several hours and see if it freezes up.

While you have the inside cover off, there is a sensor that clips to the coils that senses frost and sometimes it can come off , without that sensor in tact, it will not automatically defrost when necessary, that could be your problem...

That sensor was the problem with mine. I moved it upward toward the top of the coils ams the problem stopped. Has not happened again.

These are def some good tips my 2015 high country 5'er froze up multiple times. It at dealer ship now for a few things the AC being one of them. Mine would freeze on auto. Turn the ac off open main outlet and put fan on high it would blow ice out the outlet in the trailer as it thawed.
Should it run on auto thru the ducts without freezing or is it a must to run it with main outlet open or fan on high??

Mine now works fine and does not freeze up since I moved the Iceing sensor upward on the coils inside the air box. Also I took aluminum tape and taped all the joint inside the airbox so the cold air did not go right back into the return air. I run ours on auto and thru the duct work now with no problems.

Mine was also freezing up. I called a repair service to come look at it and he said "are you running it on low?" I said yes and he said just turn it to high speed. Did so and haven't had a problem since then. Imagine, a mobile service passing up a service call and telling me the solution on the phone?

Yeah mine runs fine on hi but when I got buddies with newer rigs and they set there's matching mine in auto mine would freeze up. They have Jaycos if that matters maybe but I am gonna take the advice about taping up the ducts and the inside plenum area and move the sensor up. Thanks for everyone's input. This forum rocks for input.
