Dirt dauber nest on the fan blades ??? Tree leaves or pine needles in the fan blades??? A dead mouse or chipmunk in the fan blades ???
The only way to know for sure why the unit is making more noise than usual is to climb on the roof, take the shroud off and do a visual inspection to see if there's a "reason"...
As for the air distribution. Most A/C units of that era had a "dump feature" on the ceiling unit. There are vents on the underside with a "shutter" that slides left or right. Usually, if there's air "dumping from the ceiling unit" it's because the shroud is open. It's designed to be a "quick cool feature" for the area immediately under the A/C unit. Open the shutter for "quick cool" and more noise, close the shutter for "air through the ceiling vents" and a bit less noise.....
