Did I do a Very Bad Thing to my water pump?

Hi all--

Whoops! I left the water pump running for two weeks while we had a connection and a dry freshwater tank. This morning I was thinking "what on earth is running over there?" I think I blew off the noise because there was a clog in the bathroom sink that I just took apart last night (turns out the eyedrop container fell in) and the brain told me clog=pump goes. Agh! Let's blame the new puppy.

Did I do a Very Bad Thing? Anyone recommend a system check to verify that the poor water pump recovered?

Wow she still works! Regardless, I would replace it with a new pump and keep that one as a backup. Nothing worse than your pump quitting in the middle of a trip and no where to get one. Why take a chance. I carry a new spare. Never know when I or a fellow camper may need one. Plus they're not that expensive. Take care.

Does it still work when you add water to the tank?

Most RV water pumps are designed to run dry and not hurt them. I've ran my dry a couple of times and it still works fine. You can always check your user manual for the pump or go to the manufactures web site with the pump model number and see if it states if it can run dry or not.

I had a 29ft cruiser I kept out on the lake during the summer months. Left the water pump on by accident when leaving after the weekend stay, it ran dry for 7 days. Never had any problems with the pump after that. Ran fine.

Ever take one apart?

You didn't hurt it, all it is a three part rubber disk that is off center on the motor shaft which sucks up the water in one chamber, then pushes it out to the next, then to the next and out to the discharge pipe. They are made to run dry and therefore be self priming. Stop worrying about the small stuff and worry about something more important like your tires...
