Heat pump tripped breaker and smells hot

Yesterday afternoon, we returned to our parked 5th wheel. The weather wasn’t extreme as we unpacked (no coat required), but it had clearly rained just before we returned.

Last night, We noticed that the heat pump wasn’t warming the rig and, upon further inspection, wasn’t coming on at all. Breaker was tripped. Flipped the switch and it turned on almost immediately. BUT it smelled like hot electronics throughout the rig very fast and tripped the breaker right away. What are we up against? I can’t find the perfect thread that already covers this. Thankfully, the furnace is working....but this isn’t good news for us and our timelines. Yes, still under warranty, but we’re parked somewhere that we cannot move it out immediately.

Family of 5 really appreciates any knowledge contributions!

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry it’s not under better circumstances, let’s see if we can get this figured out. Is it a heat pump or does your AC have a heat strip?

Heat pump is essentially the AC running in reverse, and heat strips are added and use the AC fan for circulation. If it’s a heat pump, what happens when you operate just the fan?

Thanks. We tried just the fan and it appears to work on both high and low after resetting the circuit breaker. The factory thermostat on the rig offers heat pump and furnace options. We were told it was a heat pump.

That doesn’t sound encouraging. :/
Sort of sounds like we need to schedule warranty work.
