Traveling to Canada
We are planning a trip up north this summer for about a week. We are planning to visit and camp in the Niagara falls area (US side). we will use this as a base for our day trips. One of our day trips will be to the Canada side of Niagara Falls and areas around it in Canada. I am a seeing mixed information on what is needed to travel into Canada. It will be my wife and I as well as our 2 children (Ages 7 and 3). Do we need passports, do the children need passports?

Don't do it man you might not be able to get back in! lol!
Yes a passport is what you'll need and birth certs for your kids. I heard that now you'll also need a shot verification for your pets. Enjoy your trip

Stay on the Canadian Side!!!
With the exchange rate, Us/Canadian $$$) Your vacation dollars will go farther in Canada, especially with a family. Use your own bank. or in Canada, use a Provincial/Government exchange point, so you don't pay an exchange fee. In Niagara Falls, Canada, the Casino is a fee free funds exchange. Switching US for Canadian, this was the first time I left a Casino with more money than I walked in! LOL
You will need Passports. A cheaper alternative is a Pass-card. It is only good for Mexico, and Canada, but is cheaper than a full blown passport if you don't plan on France, etc... Also a good idea to get "Verified Drivers License/Secure ID" from your states DMV. Check with your state.
p.s. The Border Agents don't have a sense of humor on either end of the bridge!
GOOD LUCK,

Might also add to Pull Toy's advice be sure you know about the firearms thing. And it's $10,000CDN not US to bring with you. Canada border guys/gals absolutely don't have a sense of humour. I have crossed back and forth hundreds of times and have found the US guys/gals are far more accommodating. JMHO

I agree with Joe. US Customs are far friendlier. Any firearms you may be carrying, leave on the US side, no exceptions. ( not worth the hassle to import ) and generally not allowed . Passports are a firm YES , the kids only need proof of citizenship . If you have any potential police involvement in a negative way , stay on US side , they won't let you in.
It may be cheaper to stay on the Canadian side . And way less time out of your day. Crossing customs can be very time consuming , traffic and clearance at customs.
I'm not sure if there are National Parks near that crossing , ( worth investigating ) entry to the National parks is free this year , camping fees still apply. With exchange on the dollar being good for the US , a win for you .
Here is a link to Gov Canada site on the rules . http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/apply-who.asp

Check with your credit card issuers for their foreign transaction fees and be careful of overusing your credit card(s). Also, you might want to turn off your cellphone or the charges for calls, messages and emails may ruin your vacation.

We have Verizon for our cell phone provider. We toured western Canada last year and Verizon has a plan that I think was only $3.00 per day when you used it. That may not be the correct amount but it was very reasonable and my wife was able to call her mother almost every day. Give them a call and check it out.
