smell of propane

We're getting the smell of propane when we turn on the heat. The smell is in the bedroom end of the trailer. I don't know if I'm overreacting? We're new to this RV experience.

Open a window or go out and leave the door open. Then it's time for questions.
Is the furnace lighting?
Is it propane or the smell of the oil and dust burning off the insides?
Did the furnsce ever light or is this the first time?

Should really have it checked out. Propane like all combustables is not to be taken lightly. As the previous post said it may be the newness in the furnace burning off.

Welcome to the forum!

Propane leaking has a very distinct odor, and it takes very little to set off the LP detector in the RV. LP is heavier than air so the detector will be near floor level, make sure it isn't covered and the light is on showing it is operating. You can test it to be sure, and then try again. If your trailer is brand new and this is your first outing, it's very possible that as described above, your smelling oil from manufacturing process burning off. Some dealers don't do a proper PDI like we do. I run the furnace long enough to set off the smoke alarm and then an additional 10-15 minutes.

Looking at your profile you do not have a newly manufactured trailer. Being a RK model the furnace is usually under the kitchen sink and the propane bottles are under the bedroom. As mentioned, ventilate the trailer well and test the propane detector. Since you say the smell is up in the bedroom I would start with a complete leak test of both bottles and all connections then look further at the furnace for ignition and condition of heat exchanger. If you are not familiar with these systems please have it checked by a professional. JM2˘,Hank

This is providing that the smell is propane and not just the normal burn off that occurs when the furnace has not been used for a while.

I do not know the configuration of your trailer but you might check all the connections around the LP tanks. I had an LP smell in our trailer, had it checked twice by the dealer, and was told all was OK. Went on for 2 years. Finally, on a repair trip for other items, they told me the trailer failed a leak test. They replaced the regulator and all was well....you never know.

All good advice - just an FYI - we would occasionally get a "whiff" of propane. Our 5er has the split bottle set up. It turned out to be the red regulator on the road side bottle that was leaking. $15 later all was good again. Leak test All of the fittings, hoses etc.
