GN Hitch Mounted at Rear of Truck Bed

I have seen several HDT with the fifth wheel hitch moved all the way to the rear of the truck bed so I thought I would try that idea on my MDT. Not sure what to expect but I will find out. Any thoughts about this? YEA or NAY?

What's the payload of that beast? A little extra leverage behind the axle might not bother it a bit. Still might see a little more bounce though.

Have you had it on the road yet?

I would be curious how it handles?

Anything mounted aft of the center of the rear axle is going to cause some degree of unloading of the front axle. That could be felt as lighter steering feel, less control or more bouncing over rough roads. Unless there is an issue with cab clearance in tight turns, I wouldn’t mess with it.

When one posts, one should assume that some of the readers are not very conversant with acronyms or initials. PLEASE, what is HDT? (high definition television?)

Sorry about the confusion. HDT stands for Heavy Duty Truck as in class 8 semi trucks. MDT stands for Medium Duty Trucks as in Class 6 or Class 7 trucks. I am on some other sites and that is their way of describing the size of trucks. I should have been more descriptive.

I have not had it on the road yet with the hitch at the back. About the payload, I have put the truck on certified CAT scales and according to the yellow sticker on the door, with a GVWR of 33,000 pounds, I have 14,000 pounds of available hitch weight. My pulling our little Alpine 3650RL with its 15,500 plus gear and it's puny 2,675 pounds of hitch weight is almost like bobtailing with an empty truck. The Reese air bag hitch helps a lot with the bouncing and ride.

I had already mounted a small crane behind the headboard to lift our aluminum steps onto the truck and that cut the clearance down a few inches when the camper was not even 90 degrees. While I know that severe of an angle would be a rare situation to be in to even have a need to have such angle but stuff happens. We also intend to carry a few more items on the back of the truck and can use the extra 32" that the hitch set-back created. I had pulled it quite often with the hitch mounted a few inches forward of the rear axle and all was good. I will find out if there is any difference this coming weekend when we go camping again. Thanks for the input.
