Talking Maintenance Work

Wow, I feel good. I haven't done any real mechanical work in years until today. Bought a new air pneaumatic 12 ton bottle jack from Harbor Freight for $79 and a 350 FtLb impact wrench from Lowes $29 (figured it wouldn't work. Changed two tires on my 5ver and adjusted all four brakes in under an hour. I love having tools that really work.

Oh how true those words are. Years and Years ago, when we had too little money and too much need, my tool box consisted of make shift parts from other broken sets and a couple of "found on the road" tools that I'd picked up through the years. When changing the blade on my lawn mower one Saturday the "fitzall" wrench slipped and I cut the tendon on my knuckle... Needless to say, that wrench went flying to parts unknown and I never looked for it. The remaining tools got thrown in the trash after a trip to the ER and I promised myself I'd never do anything like that without proper tools again. Now, it seems like every time we go downstate, I wind up walking the aisles of Sears (Craftsman) and Harbor Freight (inexpensive but good handtools) for things to augment my three tool boxes. Actually, there's 4, the small one in the trailer never leaves the RV storage bay except in campgrounds.....

Having the right tools just makes doing maintenance simpler and really much less stressful. Maybe it would be going "too far" to say it makes it joyful, but finishing any job does that for us LOL

I agree totally with both of you. My DW makes fun of me sometimes because I have a complete set of tools in the truck, camper, garage and work shop in the basement. These include both SAE and metric tools, my hand tools cover the fasteners that are standard size on most vehicles. When she bought her new VW TDI, guess what a metric tool kit went into the trunk in her car too.

I also have 4 torque wrenches; one in inch pounds and three in FT Lbs. Most of these tools have been collected over 46 years. I learned when I was a kid to buy the best tool you could afford since they will last you a life time. I started out with Craftsman tools in the late 60’s and now buy mostly Snap-on or Mac tools for hand use only. Never have enough tools in a tool box.

Talking Tools

Yeh Jim, the key word was what you could afford at the time. I was looking through my tool boxes yesterday and was surprised what I had.
A 1/2 drive S&K socket set from Gambles Skogmo hardware stores from the mid-west 1967
Set of open end wrenchs from Montgomery Wards (couldn't afford craftsman) in 1969.
A carpenters hammer that my Dad gave me in the early 60's, Years and years of memories out there in those tool boxes and the DW just doesn't understand. She's got knick nacks from 50 years ago that I don't understand so I guess we're even.
I'm glad she doesn't read this blog, Ouch I would be in trouble.

One Christmas I gave my DW her own toolbox filled with tools. Everyone said I was terrible but she was thrilled. (no more getting yelled at for using mine) Now you want to hear her holler if I get lazy and don't go the garage for a screw driver and try to use one of hers. What goes around comes around ... I guess.

Favorite tool in the trailer is my 24v cordless Dewalt ½in. impact wrench. Makes tire changes a snap.

Talking Me Too

Yeh Hank, I did the same thing. Bought her a in house tool set, got lazy and used her screwdriver, "ONCE". That's all it took, I'm a fast learner. I would love one of those Dewalt impacts but my $29 impact will have to do. My favorite ones now are these new compact 12 volt units for traveling. Got a Rigid 12 volt drill and a 7 in 12 volt multitool from sears. They pretty well handle trailer things.
