Electrical question
So I have an interesting issue. I plugged my camper in at a friends place and I was going to clean it out and get it ready to go. The ac compressor wouldn’t kick in. I measured at the 50amp outlet and both legs voltages are correct when not plugged in. I tested at an outlet in the camper and got 125 volt, but when the ac compressor was trying to come on it would jump to 180 volts until I turned it off.
Any idea on the culprit?

Plugged into a 50 Amp outlet or an adapter plugged into a 15 Amp outlet?

I’m thinking the issue is your friends power.

I think it is too but I just want to make sure when I get to the campground that something isn’t wrong with the 5er

Do you have an EMS to give you real time numbers as it happens?

Therein lies your problem. The EMS would have told you the reason for the AC anomaly vs trying to guess at it plus shutting down the RV when you encounter bad/insufficient voltage as is what probably happened. I would get one before I went anywhere.

Yeah I have a surge protector but not an ems those are pretty pricey. And yes I get the irony that replacing the electrical is pricier.

When voltage between one hotleg and the neutral changes from 120 volts to 180 volts, this is what happens when the neutral is not connected properly. If you happened to have had a volt meter at that moment checking voltage, the other hotleg to neutral would have measured 60 volts. The voltage between the two hotlegs would have still measured 240 volts, but without the neutral connected properly, the voltage does not stay stable. Under no circumstances should you use that power source until the loose connection is found and corrected. The problem can originate anywhere in the system all the way out to the utility transformer, and this is real voltage and will do serious damage to anything connected. Also, you might change your mind about the expense of an EMS the first time you have thousands of dollars of damage to your rig and it's contents from bad voltage.

As indicated above it sounds like you could be losing your neutral. This could well be within your camper. I recommend checking your electrical panel to be sure all connections are tight. Then turn off all circuit breakers before plugging in at the campground. After plugging in check the voltage on the control panel and turn on the breakers one at a time.
