30 Amp and 50 Amp Surge Protector

We will soon be breaking into the 50 amp world with our new 5th wheel, but I'm confused about hooking up at some of our favorites camping spots that only offer 30 amp service. Currently we have a 30 amp TT with a 30 amp portable TRC surge protector and I was going to buy a 50 amp TRC surge protector for the new 5th wheel. The question is, since we may at times be connecting to 30 amp service at a campground would we use the 30 amp or 50 amp surge protector for the new 50 amp system?

I could be wrong but I think a 50 amp surge protector will still protect you on a 30 amp service.Just get the 50 to 30 amp pigtail for your cord. I certainty would want to be able to plug into a 50 amp service if I could get it. Since your new 5er will run better withe increased amperage.

Yes. The 50 amp surge protector is what you want. The 30 to 50 pig tail splits the 30 amp power between both legs of the 50 amp power cord, still allowing you to run everything in the trailer, you are just limited to 30amp total draw between both legs, so don't run to much at once. The 50amp surge protector is the only one that will protect both legs of power.

That's what I was told. I just bought a 50 amp SP and was told to use a pig tail when needed.

That seems to be the preferred combo. Even tho we have 50A capabilty, sometimes we opt to only pay for a 30A site if both (or no) AC's aren't required.

50A surge protector and a 50/30A pigtail.

As others have said, you need a 50amp surge protector. Then use your 50 to 30amp adapter if you have to use a 30amp outlet.

With that said, your TRC choice is not the best. Too many reports of Fire and only a 1 year warranty.

Progressive Industries with EMS is the best on the market with a Lifetime warranty. The EMS feature not only protects against surges but also monitors for mis-wiring, low and high voltage limits and correct frequency.

Good Surge Protectors are truly a "you get what you pay for" item.

Thank you all for your help and special thanks to Shiggs68 for the additional info concerning the best type of surge protector to get, I had no idea. When considering the cost of this 5'er I want nothing but the best for the electrical system.
