Cougar Auto Level

Hi, So while on this trip, we went in and looked at some new trailers. We looked at the new Cougars and really liked what we saw. I noticed some of the cougars now have automatic levelling. Does anyone have this on their cougar? What about other models that have it. How do you like it? How well it works, and if anyone's had any problems? I'm thinking this would be nice, especially getting older.

Thanks in advance.

When we were at the factory in July, I noticed the "Cougar auto level system" being installed on all the models that were on the assembly line. They were building "High Country" models at that time, so I don't know what is currently available on the "standard build" models.

With that stated, from what I saw, the "auto level" system consisted of two "gyro systems" installed in the underbelly and two electric jacks mounted to the frame rails just behind the axles. These jacks, along with the gyro input, will raise the trailer in conjunction with the front landing gear, and position it to a level position.

That's half the story (in my opinion) because the front landing gear is subject to movement, so effective stabilizing of the trailer isn't a part of this system. In a "true" auto-level/stabilization system, 4 or 6 jacks are used to raise the RV to level and also stabilize the RV from movement. In the Cougar system, I don't think stabilizing is an integral capability based on two jacks being placed where they are located. I'd think a JT strongarm or BAL stabilizing bar system installed on the front landing gear would still be needed to stabilize the RV.

As for leveling the RV, it did work well on their demonstration, but for stabilizing, it left a bit to be desired. Easily remedied by a future owner, but not a "complete answer" to "pushbutton camping".

My Laredo has Lippert four jack auto level. All four jacks are electric. Two front and two rear just behind the rear most axle. They do an awesome job of leveling. They'll even lift the 5th wheel high enough to change a tire! But like JRTJH said.....they don't stabilize very well. Ours had dealer installed JT strong arm front jack system, and they do help tremendously. But I think it still needs something in the rear also. I've been searching for a rear kit and will prob buy or make something next spring before camping season starts.

Not familiar with the cougar system, but we have the 6 point Lippert system on ours and love it. I never thought I'd say this before owning one, but it is probably one of the best upgrades for an RV, even at the hefty $6k price tag.

We have the 4 point system on our cougar without the high country package. DH loves it. It is as stable without bars as the passport was with 4 BAL bars. Is it rock steady no wiggle? Nope. Put it's pretty solid. Makes set up a breeze.
