Question Winterizing on the Gulf Coast

Let me hear from you Houston area people. Do you winterize your rv?

Is Alvin close enough (between Houston and Galveston)?

We don't automatically winterize. We just keep an eye on the long range weather forecast and take action if a really cold spell is coming.
.
The most we've had to do since buying our first hard sided trailer in 2005 is drain the pipes using the low point drains.

Houston had a cold snap over Christmas in 1985 (I think.) The pipes in peoples houses froze. Being Christmas, lots of people were away. The water department went around cutting off water to houses where the water was running out the door.

I would at least drain your trailer.

1985 sounds about right for that cold spell. We didn't have an RV at that time, so we only had to deal with frozen pipes in our house. That cold spell would have required full winterization.

1985 and 1983 if my memory is correct.
I believed the weatherman this last winter when they forecast a "hard freeze". That's about 18-20 degrees for us. (quit laughing). I got 6 gallons of RV antifreeze and poured it in the fresh water tank. Pumped it through the system. Left it about 3 weeks.
Liberty Texas...just out of Houston.

My Rule of Thumb is if the signs on the side of the road say "BRIDGES ICE BEFORE HIGHWAYS" your too far North and have to Winterize to some extent to be safe. Also it is too far North to spend the Winter

I remember that, my aunt & uncle were visiting us in NC when they got the call that their pipes burst in their house in Galveston.

I was lucky in those freezes and lost just one hose bib..exterior faucet. For those that don't live in the deep south...we usually build houses with the water supply lines just lying on the ceiling joists in the attic. They may have an inch or two of insulation over them. Pipes in the exterior walls may have foam insulation.
We had a motorhome in the 1983 and 1985 freezes, I don't remember ever winterizing it.
