Getting back to the original post, if the spinners on the wheels are not open on the end, it is likely the the axles do not have zirks to be able to grease the bearings. With only 1400km, you probably don't need to service the bearings or brakes. If you do want to service and inspect, you might as well pull the drums, inspect the brakes, and hand pack the bearings. Even if the axles were E-Z-Lube, they are very prone to leaking grease past the seals onto the brakes, even when following the directions to the letter.

Absolutely agree. There is no better way, IMHO, to repack wheel bearings than by hand. When I repacked ours, there was grease extruded past at least one of the seals. I had never used the E-Z lube feature - I'm guessing the dealer did. Packing by hand also gives you the opportunity to make sure the spindle nut torque is correct.

I was certainly aware of the easy lube axles. However, my wheels have a centre cap/ hub that I thought had to come off in order to get at the grease nipple. Last night I was cleaning the wheels trying to get a little rust off of the centre cap and noticed they have a 2 inch capped access opening in the centre of each one. This will eliminate the need to remove each wheel in order to grease the bearings. But, the wheels still need to be spun as the grease is being pumped into each bearing.

Picked up my "Trailer Aid" today. Works fantastic. Certainly worth the expense. Could have stacked 2 by 6's as suggested and helpded save the world of more plastic but nice to know this tool was not going to fail and drop my trailer on me. Brought the rear axle up about 5 inches and the front up about 2 inches. I bought the one with the extra one inch of lift. Probably a good thing. Will now become part of my stowed tools.

I purchased the traileraid over the winter and when I went to grease my hubs the other day discovered my axles are to spread out for it to work. Oh well that is money not well spent. If anyone is interested give me a shout and offer and I will be happy to sell. They were used once on both axles to see if I could get them to work.

James

Mine are the yellow standard model.

I just raised my tires for the first time this weekend, and now realize how ill prepared we are for a flat on the road. I had to use my 2 ton jack with a couple scraps of 2x4 to get it up, after driving up on a ramp of every Lynx leveller we own didn't do it (spread axles).
Might start carrying some 2x6s, might get more Lynx, but don't want to carry a huge jack all the time.
Crap.

How many times do you pump the handle on the grease gun to not over fill?

You should notice a color change when the new grease has worked it's way through the spindle, the inboard bearing, and finally the outboard bearing. When you think all the grease you are seeing is new, stop. May be 6 strokes, may be 12.
I would use a red grease. Mobil1, Lucas, etc. look for one with a high drop point and corrosion inhibitors.

Jacking up a TT to grease or change a tire

I NEVER use the zerk fittings. You really have no way of knowing if grease is pushing past the seal and coating your magnet/drum and/or brake shoes.

I've seen it first hand when I do axle services at work. The drum can be saved most of the time as can the magnet. Shoes on the other hand....just sayin!

Yep, it's definitely a crap shoot. Spin the wheel and cross your fingers.

I just did the bearings for the 1st time as the trailer is 1.5 years old, the brakes were fine and the rear axle grease was fine would have easily gone another season but the front axle had almost no grease in the bearings probably assembled by a different guy. all is good now
