water pump issues
so, my water pump takes for ever to charge the lines and when it does it spits and spudders all the time. But when i am hooked up to city water everything works fine. I checked for loose fittings to see if air is getting in on the intake side but everything is tight. I think the pump is just a piece of crap. Any other ideas??

If the pump can push air, the problem is NOT the pump.
First, is there any water in the fresh water tank?
Second, is the water heater bypass set for normal use? And is the valve fully flipped?
If everything works OK on city water, there has got to be an air source upstream of the pump. Is this a new condition and everything worked previously?

I got the unit last summer and it has pretty much been like this since i got it. I did notice there is a bypass valve on a three way tee behind the hot water heater, not sure what position it is supposed to be in. I get hot water though so i figured it wasn't that, but I have never had a bypass valve so I know nothing about them. How do they work??

The bypass valve works by shutting off or allowing water to flow into the HW tank. In one position water will flow into the tank; in the other, the valve closes preventing any water from entering.
When winterizing and after you have drained the water from your HW tank, the valve should be closed so you don't end up filling your tank with pink solution. When you de-winterize, the valve should be opened to allow water to fill the tank.
If you have water in your tank now, the bypass is in the OPEN position. You might want to make a small sketch of it showing which way the valve is positioned ---vertically or horizontally --- so you know when it is closed or open.

so let me get this straight, If my bypass was closed, I would not be getting any hot water correct?

The bypass valve is a two position valve. In one position the heater is bypassed. In the other position the heater is in the water circuit and you would be getting hot water.
Your pump may have an adaptor to allow sucking pink winterizing fluid from the jugs. If it has one of these make sure the valve to this open ended tube is fully closed. This would normally be right at the pump suction somewhere.
Hope that helps.

When you first fill the system, you need to get all the air out of the water heater. Otherwise the faucets will spit and sputter. I usually open the WH relief valve until the air is out of the WH. Then I open the faucets until all the air is out of the system.
