Pine needles in my ice cubes

Yep....we seem to get a fare amount of foliage in the freezer. I'm guessing that it is coming in through the vent that sits on the roof but I would have though that there would be screening or something to keep crap from falling down into the chill chest. Has anyone every taken the vent cover off that can tell me what to expect? All the fasteners are sealed in chalk so I'd like to know what I'm in for before I get started.

Thanks

Bob

Bob, The roof vent just vents hot air from the rear of the fridge visible when you remove the outside wall vent. There should be no openings into the freezer itself. Unless some little critter has chewed a hole in the freezer wall, the only way in is through the door. If I ever visit I will be sure to take my drink "Neat" thank you. Good luck finding where the needles are coming from, Hank

Sorry the ice has all melted.....but
First picture is of what is in the freezer and fridge at the moment
The needles are working their way down through the openings around the mounting tabs that hold the fridge into the trailer, in behind the control panel cover and then dropping down into the freezer.

I did take the cover off the top and was able to peer down onto the top of the freezer. There is a wire screening over that opening but it's an (I think) fairly large mesh. All I have around here at the moment is nylon screening and I don't know how hot it gets up there so I'll pass on re-screening it for the time being.

Interesting that there is really only a 2" black pipe in one corner that appears to come from the gas burner.

So what's the fix......Duct tape over the holes is all I can come up with.

It's got to be almost 5 o'clock someplace...time to start making a clean batch of ice

Having had an RV of some sort for years and living in a forest of Fir trees I have NEVER had this happen or heard of it happening. I agree completely with Hankpage.

Bob -
x3 I just went out and checked our Dometic frig/freezer and there just doesn't seem to be any way that kind of forest debris could possibly find its way into that compartment. Other than 3 small holes for mounting the freezer door on the opposite side of the top trim panel, there is no obvious and visible way for anything to get inside there!
It is a puzzle to be sure!

(It's not 5 here either but just might make a drink. Ice anyone?)

Near as I can tell the top of the unit is exposed to the vent on top of the trailer. The mesh of the screen is fairly large. Stuff is falling down onto the top of the fridge and working it's way forward and slipping through the open spaces around the mounting screws, which are now covered up with duck tape. From there they would work their way between the panel that has the on/off auto/gas buttons in it and sit on top of the freezer door. When I would go to open the door they would fall into the freezer and land in my ice cube trays. Or if I for some reason opened both doors they would wind up in fridge. The suspect openings now have duct tape over them so we shall see.

Thanks for the pic uploads

Is this for an outdoor kitchen?

My imagination is having a hard time rendering how these pines ended up in your fridge.

Picture 3 is out of focus... Can the experts chime in? Is there a vent on the top?

Picture 4 - Ok I was advised to put a bug screen on the side fridge vent - do I need to put a bug screen on the top fridge vent?

Again, thanks for sharing and giving us rookies a heads up.

Kind of off topic, but I have screens on fridge outside access door, furnace, and water heater access. None on roof vents. No trouble in many years and over 100,000 miles. We have lots of mud daubers where TT is stored. Maybe they don't like roofs?

Wow, I don't know how this is happening, however, please think about a couple of things:
1. I wouldn't put smaller mesh in the flu of the refer. I would be afraid that restricting the chimney effect of the vent would reduce the cooling capability of the refer.

2. There is no way, IMO, that there should be any holes or other passages between the interior of the freezer box and the outside. If you are still under warranty, get to a dealer or contact the refer mfr. Good luck and please keep us posted!

I am still betting on critters somewhere involved in this mystery. I have to admit after many years of RV'ing this is the first time I have heard this one.

something to think about, the fridge MUST BE SEALED so the outside does not pass any carbon monoxide form outside to inside-very dangerous if there is not a tight barrier there, I repeat the fridge outside MUST BE SEALED from the inside or it can be very dangerous!

I get how this is happening...the needles don't get into the freezer until I open the door to the freezer. They are sitting on top of the door having worked their way down thru the openings around the cut outs that the screws that hold the unit into the trailer from the vent cover on the top of the trailer. It's a big shaker that after having sat under a tree all night and then being driven (rattled around) all day the needles make their way to the top of the door and when I open it they fall in. I have sealed the cut outs with duck tape and do not expect to find anything in my ice any more.

What if you use spray foam insulation to fill the holes making sure not to also plug any ventilation spaces and use fiberglass screen for the roof vent from any hardware store? The fiberglass screen (same as for screen door) should tolerate any heat coming from the unit, as well as keep the outdoors out.
