If a "push comes to a shove" and you're "stuck with a inoperable slide in an emergency"... Any hardware store sells stainless steel cable by the foot. You can also get swedges and a crimping tool (if you don't have one) from a hardware store. You can reuse the threaded eye-bolt from the existing broken cable.

There's nothing "scientific or magical" about buying a "BAL cable kit" vs buying the "common hardware parts" at any hardware store.....

Essentially, buying the "kit" is more for convenience than it is because of some "special part you can't buy otherwise".....

That is good to know John. I think there might be two kinds of swedges, aluminum and steel? Is aluminum OK or is it to soft?

#1-you can get them out of one of Amazon’s suppliers by Aug 13/14.
#2-i had to “fix” one in the middle of AZ last year I didn’t have a crimping tool so I used two small cable clamps and they work fine.

Why Not Jacketed Cable?

After seeing the 'birds nest' that accumulated with my cable fray and then watching the entire slide system run after cable replacement with the fascia off, I'm wondering why BAL does not manufacture/provide/recommend some type of vinyl wrapped cable for this application....similar to what you would find for a dog run. Doesn't seem as if a wrapped cable would have an issue running through the pulleys at this diameter, and seems as if it would be a helluva lot more wear resistant.

If you think about it if the friction is enogh to wear thru steel cable then the vinyl coating won't stand a chance. The coating on the dog run cable is more about protecting your skin (and the dog) from a frayed strand and keeping water from corroding it.

The sharp edges of the guide plates would probably cut through the vinyl covering making it a "trash hazard" going through the pulleys.... If the cable frays in use, no doubt the vinyl cover would also fray in use at a much faster rate.
