Enough Truck

OK, I said if we bought a 5th wheel I wouldn't tell you folks.
Cancel that.
I'm looking at a Silverado 2500 HD 6.6 gasser.
KEYSTONE RV COUGAR HALF-TON 24RDS

I can't give you exact numbers on the Chevy because it's on order but I'm thinking I'm way under stressed.

The idea of 1/2 ton towable 5ers is just stupid but 1/2 ton towables with a 2500 is reasonable I think.

You're right. The marketing on those is very misleading. It should be labeled "False Advertising" and forced to be corrected to real numbers.

You're right, that trailer isn't for 1/2 ton trucks. 1000lb GVWR, which is approx 2000lb hitch weight.

Look at the payload sticker in the truck you're interested in to see how much payload you have. Subtract the 2000lbs for the hitch and the remainder is for your hitch, passengers, and cargo.

You might be OK but the numbers will tell you.

You won't even be close to anything because the new Chevy 2500 6.6L gassers usually have 10,500 GVWR. You will probably have something in the neighborhood of 3,400 lbs payload on that beast, plus or minus depending on the options you selected. I know I was considering a 2020 6.6L last year when I was shopping and one I was strongly considering had a payload well over 3,400 lbs.

I agree with the others. Good Choice! I love our Cummins but the 2500 payload limitation is a bummer. The new gassers have similar HP and torque ratings to our 6.7 and 1/2 the weight and cost. Any new TV in our future will be a 3500 diesel since the cost is about the same as the 2500 and the payload headroom is "tons" better

The new gas engines have more HP than your 13 year old Cummins, but lack about 200 lb ft of torque.
Then compare apples to apples 2020 Cummins HO 400 HP and 1,000 lb ft torque.
The GM 6.6 gas is 401 HP and 464 lb ft torque.
The Ford 7.3 Godzilla 430 HP and 475 lb ft of torque.
Not even close in torque.

All that "worry" about disclosure of trailer information for "naught"...

For nearly all "half ton fifth wheels" a 3/4 ton gas truck is "comfortably adequate". Unless you've ordered a "every option under the sun" luxury vehicle, you should have a payload in the 3400-3800 pound range. That will carry your Cougar 24RDS and keep a comfortable margin for passengers and other cargo.

The engine is a "strong gas engine" and should have adequate power for all but the most demanding mountain grades.

I think you'll be happy with your choices. Just remember to "follow the GM break in recommendations"... It's typically not the engine, but the transmission "learning curve" and the rear end gears that need to be "treated gently for the initial miles"...

I started a post called “payload capacity video” under the towing section of the forum. It’s actually pretty good! The guy addressed nearly every issue with weight calculations.
